Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s images will hang in the gallery’s UK location
In an Instagram post dated May 23, photographer Misan Harriman revealed his photo portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will hang in the National Portrait Gallery. The photographer has been a close friend of the couple for many years.
In the post, Harriman wrote, “I am humbled and proud to announce that my portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is now part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Dare to dream, folks!”
In three slides, Harriman was seen posing with the powerful photo of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex captured at the One Young World Summit in Manchester, England, on Sept. 5, 2022. In a fourth snap, Harriman signed the back, and the entire image was revealed in the final post.
The photograph will be permanently displayed at the NPG. Kate Middleton has been a patron of the National Portrait Gallery since 2012. The late Queen Elizabeth gifted Kate this patronage shortly after her marriage to Prince William due to her interest in photography.
Why is the powerful portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle so important?
The National Portrait Gallery is a museum in London that houses photographs of Britons of relevance. Their collection dates back to 1840.
Therefore, Misan Harriman’s portrait being selected for display is an honor. He joins other esteemed photographers such as Cecil Beaton, Lewis Carroll, Toby Glanville, and Mary McCartney.
The black-and-white image Harriman snapped of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is quite powerful. The duo looks stoically away from the camera, holding hands tightly, as they await their entrance into the One Young World Summit.
The Summit marked the second time the couple returned to the United Kingdom since Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022. The event was Meghan’s first time addressing an audience since the she and Harry stepped down from their roles as senior royals in March 2020.
Three days after the image was taken, Queen Elizabeth died. The couple canceled all further engagements to mourn her loss alongside other royal family members.
What other photos has Misan Harriman taken of the couple?
Misan Harriman was friends with Meghan Markle before her relationship with the Duke of Sussex. He has taken many striking photos of the couple throughout their marriage.
Harriman was behind the camera for the image which announced Meghan and Harry’s second pregnancy. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the photographer snapped the image of the couple at their California home virtually via iPad camera from London.
He also captured a sweet image of the couple’s daughter, Lilibet Diana, for her first birthday. Harriman is subsequently one of the little girl’s godparents.
The photographer also has a tight bond with the couple’s son Archie, who loves photography. In late 2023, Meghan revealed during a screening of Harriman’s short film The After that Archie asked for a camera just like the famed photographer.
Us Weekly reported Meghan’s statements. She said, “Misan was showing him how to do photography the last time he was with us. I bought Archie a camera, and [Archie] said, ‘But it’s not a Leica like Misan.’ I said, ‘You are not getting a Leica! Not even for Christmas.'”
It has not been revealed when Misan Harriman’s portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will officially hang. Harriman lives in the United Kingdom while Harry and Meghan reside in Montecito, California.
