‘Pretty Little Liars’: Ashley Benson’s Worst Fan Encounter Was in a Shower
When Ashley Benson was cast as Hannah Marin in Pretty Little Liars, she had no idea how much her life would change. Though Benson had starred in other TV shows before, being one of the four main cast members on the hit Freeform drama would make her a household name. The popular show, which spanned 7 seasons and 160 episodes, was wildly popular amongst teens and even inspired two spinoffs.
Though the spinoffs Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists weren’t as successful as their predecessor, HBO Max is hoping that they’ll make another hit with a reboot. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin will follow a new generation of liars as they too are tormented by an evil, anonymous source. Thus far, neither Benson nor the rest of the original cast is set to make an appearance on the reboot.
Ashley Benson was crying during her ‘Pretty Little Liars’ audition
Even though Benson seems to be done acting in the world of Pretty Little Liars, she has been very candid about the fact that the show truly changed her life. It almost seemed like fate when she did get cast as Hanna because she certainly wasn’t in the best mood when she auditioned for the popular show. The night before her audition, Benson learned that another show that she’d been working on had been canceled. Naturally, she was distraught and she couldn’t keep her emotions in check when she met I. Marlene King, creator of Pretty Little Liars.
“I remember meeting Marlene for the first time and I was crying and so upset,” Benson shared with Vulture back in 2017. “My show had just been canceled! She sat in the room and she said, ‘The second that you walked in, I felt you as Hanna.’ It was a really crazy connection. I didn’t read the script or anything, I just read Hanna’s sides. I also knew that Lucy [Hale] was doing it, and we’ve known each other forever, so that was really exciting. I had this weird instinct that this would become a really big thing.”
Benson recalls her weirdest encounter with a ‘PLL’ fan
Benson’s instincts were spot on as Pretty Little Liars did become a phenomenon. The show boasted some diehard fans that were obsessed with every detail of the teen drama. The Spring Breakers star once recalled a particularly memorable and extremely awkward fan encounter that she had with a fan of the show. On an episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actor recounted the experience.
“I was at a Korean spa and I was showering,” Benson recounted. “A girl came into my shower stall and she was like, having a full-on conversation.” The Pretty Little Liars star shared that the fan requested a picture and wanted to know who “A” was. “I was like ‘I’m literally, like, in a shower. Uhhh not the best time.’ And then she like waited around for me to come out and I was so embarrassed. I was like ‘Oh my gosh.'” Clearly, the cast of Pretty Little Liars had to deal with some wild fan moments. Hopefully, the cast of the reboot won’t have to deal with comparable invasive moments.
