It’s no secret that the royal family spares no expense on, well, anything. The family, whose total net worth is somewhere in the realm of $90 billion, could easily drop millions on their wardrobe each year. But it turns out they know how to spend on royal trips, too. Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles once spent more than $500,000 on one royal tour.

Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles spend more on travel than any other royals

Each year, the royal family releases a Sovereign Grant Report, which details exactly how the family spends the money given to them by the government. This is meant to keep tabs on the royals, though it mostly just reminds us that they’re not nearly as relatable as they wish to be.

Between 2018 and 2019, Charles and Camilla spent more on travel than any other royal couple. Charles has come under fire for his travel methods in the past, since he claims to be pro-environment, yet often flies private helicopters or jets to his destinations. Still, the future king and queen consort don’t seem to mind how much they spend on their royal needs. The two racked up a $1 million+ tab on only three royal trips between 2018 and 2019.

Charles and Camilla’s royal Caribbean tour cost about $560,000

In early spring 2019, Charles and Camilla jetted off to the Caribbean on a 12-day tour, where they visited 10 total islands, including Cuba. (The two made history as the first royals to make an official visit to Cuba.) Over the course of less than two weeks, though, the couple spent around $560,000. While the trip did entail some more serious aspects, it was also a time for the two to have fun. They drank rum and made mojitos in Cuba, strolled on the beach in Grenada, and even broke royal protocol by hugging people in Barbados, according to Insider. Somewhere along the line, though, they spent an unbelievable amount of money.

The cost of the trip likely comes from the amount of travel and security required throughout its duration. The couple visited 10 different islands and had more than 50 official royal engagements, which certainly inflated those travel and security costs.

Fans have scolded the royals over being out of touch with the public

Charles and Camilla aren’t the only ones who have been accused of overspending on lavish things such as travel. Prince William and Kate Middleton took heat last year for flying on private jets after making a big deal about their efforts on helping the environment. Now, they fly commercial when it’s possible and safe.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have also found themselves in poor taste with the public at times; the two spent nearly $3 million on home renovations at Frogmore Cottage only to leave the royal family a short time later (they have since repaid the money). Prince Harry came under fire again in late 2020 for his speech on environmental practices; the public called him out for living in a 16-bathroom mansion while he spoke about saving water.
