Prince Charles Reportedly Wanted 1 Thing to Be Taken From Princess Diana Upon Their Divorce
Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship has fascinated people for almost four decades. From their courtship to their divorce, royal followers have been clamoring to find out all the details about what went on between Charles and Diana.
It has been said that Charles and Diana were not on the best of terms when they broke up. In fact, Charles allegedly even tried to get something taken from Diana in their divorce settlements.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana got married in 1981
Charles and Diana first met in 1977 when Charles was seeing Diana’s older sister, Sarah Spencer, at the time. However, Charles and Sarah’s romance did not progress very long, and Charles ended up dating Diana in 1980.
Charles and Diana quickly married in 1981. The couple’s wedding was a highly-anticipated one, and it became the most viewed royal wedding of all time.
Then, in 1982, Charles and Diana welcomed their first child, Prince William. Their second child, Prince Harry, followed in 1984.
Charles and Diana’s marriage broke down due to Charles’ affair
While Charles and Diana’s marriage seemed like a fairy tale on the surface, it quickly broke down a few years after their wedding.
Many years before meeting Diana, Charles had a girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he was smitten with. He couldn’t marry her, however, so they broke up. Yet, Charles remained in love with Camilla, and it didn’t take long for Diana to find out about this.
In the late 1980s, Charles and Camilla started having an affair with each other. Of course, this affected Charles and Diana’s marriage greatly. She opened up about the affair in a tell-all biography published in 1992 called Diana: Her True Story. Additionally, in 1995, Diana also talked about the affair in an interview with BBC’s Panorama.
Diana and Charles officially separated in 1992, and their divorce was finalized in 1996.
What did Charles allegedly want to take away from Diana after their divorce?
During the divorce proceedings, Charles and Diana had to negotiate what each side would get. Since Diana married into the royal family and reaped a lot of benefits as a result, there were also many questions about what she could keep after the divorce.
One thing Charles allegedly was “adamant” about Diana not keeping was the title of Her Royal Highness.
“What was interesting about the divorce details was that the Queen was actually cool supposedly with letting Diana keep the HRH title. But Charles was adamant that she give it up,” said royal expert Roberta Fiorito on the Royally Obsessed podcast, according to Express.
Fiorito continued, “I thought that was really interesting because no HRH title meant that she would have to curtsy to her ex-husband and also her children.”
In the end, Diana did lose her HRH title. However, she was allowed to continue being the Princess of Wales.
Additionally, Express noted she had to give up “her large travel budget and police protection,” which affected her ability to carry on a number of charitable duties. Nevertheless, money was not an issue for Diana as she was given $22.5 million in settlement money and a $600,000 yearly salary.
