Amid Megxit, Prince William, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge have stepped forward as the faces of the royal family. As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to rage on, the Cambridges have taken on a ton of responsibility.

Though it may not have happened in the manner that he expected, Prince Charles has always wanted a more paired down royal family that focused on Queen Elizabeth II, himself, Prince William, and Prince George.

Still, the Prince of Wales is more than aware of the burden that is being laid on his eldest son’s shoulders.

Prince William didn’t want to become king

Though Prince William has stepped into his role as the future Crowned King especially amid Prince Andrew’s royal ousting and Megxit, this path is something he didn’t necessarily long for.

As a young boy, the prince confided in his late mother Princess Diana, that he had no desire to be king. “We talked about our children, and [Princess Diana] said William often told her that he didn’t really want to be king, and then Harry would say, ‘If you don’t want the job I’ll have it,’” journalist Jeremy Paxman revealed to Mirror.

Prince William is on the right path to step into his grandmother’s and father’s shoes one day, but it hasn’t been without a great deal of sacrifice.

Prince Charles has been trying to manage his relationships with Prince William and Prince Harry

Though things are reportedly still tense between Prince Harry ad Prince William, the royal brothers are allegedly speaking regularly. However, Prince Charles has been trying to manage both of his sons’ expectations as their father, and as Prince William’s boss.

“While Charles may be a father to Harry, he’s also their boss, and that makes their relationship complex for a number of reasons,” a source said in the Finding Freedom, per Entertainment Tonight. “Where you are born in this family dictates your position of power, and because of that, Harry has always come second to his brother, especially when it comes to funding. There were times in the past when Harry wanted to take on bigger projects and do more work, but he couldn’t get the money to support it. William was always the priority. A lot of their quarrels have been over budgets.”

As a new era of the royal family emerges, it seems that Prince Charles wants both of his sons to know that they’re supported.

Prince Charles teared up when Prince William talked about becoming king

Being the sovereign monarch of the British royal family is a great deal of responsibility. It means giving up your privacy and any alternative career ambitions you might have had. As we know, Prince William loved being an ambulance pilot before he was asked to retire for the sake of the Crown.

As the heir, he could never have resigned from his royal duties like his brother, Prince Harry, or he would have been mocked like King Edward VII, Queen Elizabeth’s uncle who abdicated the crown in the 1930s. Prince Charles knows all too well what his son will face.

In fact, in a new documentary series,  Prince Charles: Inside the Duchy of Cornwall via ITV the prince teared up when asked about Prince William becoming king one day and inheriting the duchy. The Prince of Wales replied, “Frankly, it reduced me to tears.”
