Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s eldest son, Prince George, is currently third-in-line to the British throne behind his father and grandfather. And many have questioned over the years when and how his parents would begin preparing him for his all-important future as the monarch.

The Duke of Cambridge previously said that he would tell George about his destiny when his son would be able to grasp and really understand “how he fits in the world.” Here’s when William reportedly told him he would be king, plus if a recent appearance shows that George is being prepped now for the future.

When Prince William and Kate told Prince George he would be king

According to royal author and historian Robert Lacey, William and his wife decided to tell George around the young prince’s 7th birthday in July 2020.

“William has not revealed to the world how and when he broke the big news to his son. Maybe one day George will tell us the story himself. But sometime around the boy’s 7th birthday in the summer of 2020 it is thought that his parents went into more detail about what the little prince’s life of future royal ‘service and duty’ would particularly involve,” Lacey wrote in the new chapter of his book Battle of Brothers (per the Daily Mail). “William’s aim as a father, the prince stressed, was to give his son ‘a normal family upbringing,’ enabling the monarchy ‘to stay relevant and keep up with modern times.’”

As to how they let George know about it, royal expert and author Katie Nicholl said the duke and duchess didn’t drop the news on him all at once. She told OK! that they have been “gradually” trying to introduce him to the fact that he’ll be the monarch someday. The young royal has known for some time that he’s “different” than his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, because he’s often “singled out” to spend more time with his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth ll.

The sign they’re preparing Prince George for his future role

Prince George’s future entails a lot so there’s a need for him to start learning about it now and be prepared for whenever that day comes. And his latest appearance seems to be a sign that has begun.

George joined his parents to watch the England vs. Wales Six Nations game at Twickenham Stadium on Feb. 26. But this appearance seemed different than other times George has tagged along with his mom and dad.

This time George looked very attentive alongside his parents as they spoke to rugby officials. After observing interactions, the sometimes shy prince decided to speak about his own play.

When Kate revealed that her oldest child has been practicing the sport and “has all the kit” George hilariously responded: “But I haven’t tackled you yet!”

Prince William has been patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016 and Kate recently took over as patron of the Rugby Football League. So naturally everyone wanted to know who George was rooting for but he remained neutral and refused to reveal which team he was supporting. That’s a trait that would certainly make his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, proud as monarchs are supposed to stay neutral on most topics and not publicly speak about their personal beliefs.

It’s pretty clear now that at 8 years old, George has already begun preparing for the role he will one day take on.
