Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not been working members of the royal family since they stepped down from their roles in 2020. Since then, the two have been living in California, and their relationship with the royal family has remained rocky.

When Harry and Meghan started dating, Harry released a statement asking the press to stop attacking Meghan, referring to it as “abuse and harassment.” The statement had always appeared on the royal family’s website — until now.  And Harry has reportedly been dealt an “upsetting shock” over its removal.

Prince Harry was in ‘shock’ over the removal of his statement on Meghan Markle

When Harry and Meghan started dating, the press started digging up as much as they could on the soon-to-be Duchess of Sussex. Beyond that, both the press and the public made attacks on Meghan Markle, some of which had racial undertones. Harry released a statement asking for his new girlfriend to be left alone, and the statement had always appeared on the royal family’s website. But now, it’s seemingly been removed in what some are calling the family’s attempt to “expunge” their past with the duke and duchess.

The statement, which Harry made in 2016, read in part: “His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment” and went into greater detail regarding Harry’s disappointment in the way the press was treating his then-girlfriend. The royal family has removed the statement from their site, and royal expert Tom Quinn told Mirror that Harry will see this as a “shock.”

“For Harry, removing the statement will be a real and very upsetting shock — he will see this as the Royal Family shutting him down, erasing an important part of the anti-media crusade Harry has waged for so long.”

Quinn continued, “Harry thinks his letter to the press about Meghan’s mistreatment should have remained on the Royal website site as a permanent reminder that Meghan and Harry are victims, not aggressors.”

Prince Harry has not commented on the statement’s removal

Harry and Meghan have very much kept their distance from the royal family for several years now, and it’s unlikely that Harry will make any kind of statement toward the removal of his words from the family website. It’s also possible that Harry and Meghan were previously informed that the statement would be removed, and it could have nothing do to with the royal family trying to attack the Sussexes (for example, the royals might just remove content that is more than eight years old, or something along those lines).

For now, it seems that Harry and Meghan are continuing to live completely separate lives from the royals, as Harry did not see his family during his recent UK trip in early May. It’s clear that tensions are still high, but it’s unclear if Harry and Meghan are upset about this recent royal move.
