It’s that time of year again when people around the world who celebrate Christmas start to think about and prepare for the holiday.

Before the big day arrives and all the cards are sent and the shopping wraps up, people plan where and who to spend the day with. And every year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their roles, there’s been speculation about whether they’ll get an invite to the royal family’s Christmas get-together.

Meghan was with her husband’s family in 2017 months before they tied the knot and again after they said “I do” in 2018. But in 2019, the Sussexes spent their first Christmas with their son in the States. A few weeks later, the duke and duchess announced they would no longer continue their roles within the family as working roles and moved to America where they have spent the holiday every year since.

Still, stories will emerge and some will take bets about whether or not Harry and Meghan would even consider returning to the U.K. for the holiday if they were to get an invite to the family’s bash. But this year it’s almost certain they won’t get an invitation to the royals’ celebration because the new hosts have washed their hands of the Sussexes. However, some reports claim that they could very well be in England spending the day with another family, not the Windsors.

Prince William and Kate to host Christmas this year

Given the year the royals have had with King Charles and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) cancer diagnoses, celebrations are said to be more muted than in the past. It’s thought that the Waleses will host the day at their Amner Hall home near Sandringham.

Kate’s family will be in attendance but it’s not yet known if any of the royals will be as the king is still undergoing treatment and may opt for a quieter holiday.

A source close to Prince Andrew told the Daily Beast: “It will be a quieter Christmas than last year, but the question is, how quiet? Usually everyone would know what bits they are invited to by now. This year, it’s just wait and see.”

No matter where all the royals end up throughout the day on Christmas, they will still gather in the morning for the family’s annual walk to church service just as they have done every other year.

Prince Harry and Meghan rumored to be invited to spend Christmas with the Spencers

With William and Kate playing host at their home, no one expects the Sussexes to get an invite. But Harry may have scored another Christmas offer to stay in England for the holidays.

Following the prince’s trip to the U.K. earlier in the year, it was reported that the Duke of Sussex stayed with his uncle, Charles Spencer, received an invitation for him, Meghan, and their two children to spend the festive period with Princess Diana’s family. As nice as it sounds for the Sussexes to return to England so that the Spencers could spend with the duke and duchess as well as Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, there’s a major roadblock to that idea.

The prince has repeatedly talked about fearing for his family’s safety as he and Meghan are no longer entitled to police protection while in the U.K. Harry has fought this matter in court but in February lost a bid for taxpayer-funded security protection for him, his wife, and his kids.

Because of this, a source has told Express: “Harry and Meghan are not going to spend Christmas with the Spencers or the royal family this year. It’s just not an option with the children at the moment due to what’s been going on with their security.”
