King Charles’ son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, have not attended a royal Christmas since 2018. The couple wed that same year and only attended one Christmas while married; plus, their children have never been present for the royal holiday.

Harry and Meghan have been out as working royal members for years. But this year’s Christmas celebration will be different; Harry’s absence is more “significant” this year for one reason — and it has to do with who is on the invite list.

Prince Harry’s step-brother will attend Christmas, but Harry will not

When Charles married Camilla, he also welcomed her two kids into the family, Laura and Tom Parker Bowles. We don’t hear much about Camilla’s kids, though her son has done the occasional interview from time to time. This year, though, the Christmas table will look a bit different, as Tom is reportedly joining in on the royal family’s high-profile Christmas Day traditions. And one expert says that this is “significant” for Harry, who will not be in attendance.

“It is very significant the fact that Tom will be there, perhaps his sister Laura as well, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet,” royal expert Richard Eden told Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential, per Express. “Tom said his mother often suggested he joined them, but he’d always said no.”

But it’s Tom’s attendance and Harry’s absence that is also a substantial situation. “To have the King’s stepson there, but not his son, is significant,” Eden added. Harry and Meghan reportedly have not been invited to a royal Christmas in quite some time, and while they likely would not go even if an invite were received, it’s still interesting to think the king invited his stepson over Harry.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will likely spend Christmas in California

Harry and Meghan traveled to Canada for Christmas in 2019, but the two have celebrated in the United States every year since then. Ever since moving into their Montecito home, the couple has had a fairly quiet California Christmas. This year will likely be the same, but it’s reportedly even more special to Harry and Meghan because their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are old enough to know about the holiday.

It’s unclear if Harry and Meghan will ever return for a royal Christmas, however Harry has made it clear that he will not bring his wife and children back to the UK until he has proper security to protect his family. Harry is still fighting to have the Sussexes’ royal security reinstated.
