Prince Harry and Prince William Are ‘Protective’ Over Their Wives Because of Past Trauma, Expert Says
Prince William and Prince Harry don’t have a strong relationship. The brothers have been on bad terms for years and rumors have swirled that William has put a temporary ban on mentioning Harry’s name due to the anxiety it has caused Kate Middleton.
Harry and William have always been protective over their wives; it’s the reason Harry left the royal family and part of the reason why William doesn’t speak to his brother. But one expert claims the brothers’ enhanced protection is due to past trauma.

Harry and William were protective of Princess Diana, even at a young age. Although they were only 12 and 15 respectively when they lost their mother in 1997, they both had an incredibly close relationship with her. And that feeling of wanting to protect their wives could stem from the trauma of not being able to do so with their mom — Harry has even said in interviews that he was so concerned history would repeat itself with the harsh bullying Meghan Markle faced from British tabloids while in the royal family.
According to Express, psychotherapist Noel McDermott said that Harry and William are so protective not only because of that past trauma but also because of the attachment they have developed to these women. “This sort of interrupted attachment, this attachment style that I talked about … Trying to find a safe attachment which wasn’t available earlier on,” McDermott said. “Then you get overprotective about that, and so that would be the theoretical model I’d be working with.”
Commentator Rachel Johnson suggested that Harry and William have “replaced” their emotions for Diana with their emotions for their wives and the mothers of their own children. Johnson suggested that part of the reason William and Harry are so sensitive to insults aimed at their wives is because “any insult to their wives is insulting their mother” in that same emotional space.
Of course, it’s all theoretical speculation based on expert opinion, but Harry has been open about doing anything and everything to make sure Meghan’s life differs from his mothers’. And William has long been intolerant of any insults aimed at Kate.

William and Harry seemingly aren’t on speaking terms, and it’s believed that William was heavily insulted by Harry bringing Kate up in past interviews. Harry did once insinuate in his Netflix documentary that William was looking for someone who fit the “mold” of the royal family “as opposed to somebody who you perhaps are destined to be with.”
The words reportedly didn’t sit well with William, and the brothers haven’t spoken since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022. Harry, on the other hand, felt that the royals weren’t doing enough to protect his wife from inside the palace walls, including William. So it seems the two men will go to great lengths to protect their wives.
