Prince Harry Would ‘Lose Too Much’ if He Divorced Meghan Not the Other Way Around, Says Former Royal Employee
People have not been able to stop talking about a recent Vanity Fair piece about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. For its February 2025 cover story, the magazine published a lengthy feature about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titled “Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Big Business Ambitions, 5 Years After Their Royal Exit.”
The exposé was filled with damning allegations including that Meghan mistreats her staff to the point where they “need therapy,” all Sussex employees have to sign NDAs even though the duchess is a big proponent of “making your voice heard,” and claims that someone on the former Suits star‘s team was shopping around a book to be published for when Meghan divorces Harry.
Regarding the divorce bit, the publication did make it clear that “no offer was ever made, and no manuscript was produced. After all: There was no divorce.” However, it certainly got some royal watchers thinking about what the likelihood would be of the pair getting a divorce.
Here’s why one person who used to work for Harry’s parents says it won’t happen.
Former royal butler says Prince Harry won’t leave Meghan because he’d ‘lose too much’
Paul Burrell began working in the royal household when he was 18 years old and served as the late Queen Elizabeth II‘s personal footman. In 1987, he was moved to the household of then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana. When they separated, Burrell served as Diana’s butler and looked after her and her sons until the princess’s tragic death.
He doesn’t believe that a divorce was ever in the cards because of how much the prince would lose.
Speaking on behalf of Prime Casino, Burrell opined: “Despite pressures on their marriage and lifestyle, I personally think there are no signs of divorce because Harry would lose too much. I think Meghan and Harry have a common goal to make themselves as rich as possible in as short a time as possible.
“I think that balance works together for the sake of their brand, their marriage. It is all the same thing. I think Meghan actually retains a fascination for lots of people.”
Royal author says the Sussexes won’t divorce because Meghan still ‘needs’ Harry
Biographer Hugo Vickers, who has written several books about members of the royal family, doesn’t see the duke and duchess getting divorced either and that’s because Meghan “needs” to stay with Harry.
“The reason that we know [Meghan] of course is not because of her career as an actress in Suits and other things — it’s because she married Prince Harry,” Vickers told The Sun. “The interesting question is: Is she, as Meghan, able to go her own path? Does she still need the Prince Harry connection? And I suspect the answer is that she does.”
Vickers added that if the duchess, who was already married once before Harry, were to leave the prince it wouldn’t reflect too well on her.
He explained: “Let’s say she did dump Prince Harry. What would the world think? I think that would be probably treated in a rather negative sort of way.”
