Prince Harry’s Called on Princess Diana During These 2 Big Moments in His Life
Princess Diana may be gone, but Prince Harry still calls on her from time to time. The Duke of Sussex, 39, revealed in his Spare memoir, which is being released in paperback, that he’s thought of his late mother at big moments in his life. Ahead, two times Harry has thought of Diana, from becoming a parent to talking with King Charles III and Prince William.
1. Harry called on Diana when Meghan Markle took a pregnancy test
Harry revealed he called on Diana, who died in 1997 following a car crash when he was 12, in the moments before he and Meghan Markle learned they were expecting their now-5-year-old son, Prince Archie.
“The wands were on the nightstand,” he said (via Spare). “I only kept a few things there, among them the blue box with my mother’s hair. Right, I thought, good. Let’s see what Mummy [sic] can do with this situation.”
“I reached for the wands, [and] peered into their little windows,” Harry continued. “Blue. Bright, bright blue. Both of them. Blue meant…baby.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex hugged and kissed. As Harry returned the home pregnancy tests to the nightstand, he thought to himself, “Thank you, Mummy [sic].”
Meghan gave birth to Archie on May 6, 2019. She and Harry later welcomed their daughter, Princess Lilibet, whom they call “Lili,” on June 4, 2021.
2. Harry asked Diana to wish him ‘luck’ before talking to King Charles and Prince William
Now for another big moment in Harry’s life where he once again called on Diana. It happened on April 17, 2024, when, after Prince Philip’s funeral, Harry had a “secret meeting” with his father and brother at the Frogmore House gardens.
They were there to discuss their growing rift, which, according to Harry, had become a “full-scale public rupture.” He silently asked his late mother for luck as the now-king and Prince of Wales approached.
“There was that same sense of embarking on a quest, and not knowing if I was up to it, while also fully knowing that there was no turning back,” he said in Spare. “That fate was in the saddle. OK, Mummy [sic], I thought, picking up the pace, here goes. Wish me luck.”
One of the many bombshells in his memoir, Harry went on to say the meeting quickly devolved into sibling bickering and a plea for it to stop from King Charles.
Diana’s ‘presence’ is ‘constant’ for Prince Harry
Harry revealed in a 2022 Today interview he’s felt Diana’s “presence” since relocating to California in 2020. “For me, [her presence is] constant,” he told interviewer Hoda Kotb. “It has been over the last two years—more so than ever before.”
Harry, who turns 40 on Sept. 15, 2024, went on to say he believed Diana helped him and William get “set up” with their own families.
“It’s almost as though she’s done her bit with, with my brother and now she’s very much back to helping me,” he said. “[She] got him set up, now she’s helping me set up. That’s what it feels like, you know? He’s his kids. I’ve got my kids.”
“You know, circumstances are obviously different. But I feel her presence in almost everything that I do now,” he added. “She’s watching over us.”
Aug. 31, 2024, marks the 27-year anniversary of Diana’s death.
