Prince Harry’s ‘Waiting’ for the Royal Family Before Moving on, Author Says
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex is waiting. For what exactly? According to author Omid Scobie, the 36-year-old’s waiting for the British royal family to take “accountability” following he and wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made multiple claims against the British royal family in their Oprah Winfrey interview
Harry and Meghan explained why they stepped back as senior royals in their 2.5-hour Oprah primetime special that aired stateside on March 7, 2021. In doing so they made serious claims against the royal family and the institution or “the firm.”
They claimed an unnamed member of the royal family — that someone Harry later told Oprah was not Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh — made a comment about the skin color of their then-unborn son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
The couple also said the firm went out of the way to correct false stories in the press about senior royals but didn’t extend the same courtesy to Meghan. Another claim, and one of the biggest from the interview? That the firm refused to help Meghan when she came to them with mental health concerns.
Prince Harry wants the royal family to take ‘accountability’ because moving on without it will be difficult, author says
Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview is being revisited. Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand are re-releasing a paperback version of their 2020 book, Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, including an epilogue about the couple’s feelings in the aftermath of the sit-down.
According to Newsweek, in U.K. publication The Daily Telegraph Scobie said Philip’s April 2021 funeral “pushed a closed door slightly ajar.” But there’s still a long way to go. Scobie said Harry believed the palace not taking any “accountability” would make moving on a difficult thing to do.
“I think he is quite willing to own his part in everything,” Scobie said of Harry, “but I have been told that he is also waiting to see some of that from the other side. As of now, there hasn’t been that.”
Two days after the interview aired in the U.S. the royal family released an official statement. According to royal author Robert Lacey, the queen delayed any response because she wanted to get the wording just right. The result was a 61-word statement saying the royal family was “saddened” by the claims even though “some recollections may vary.”
Where does Prince Harry’s relationship with the royal family stand today?
Harry’s relationship with his family is, in a word, complicated. It seems that whenever they take a step toward reconciliation something happens and they wind up back where they started. Most notably, after reports of a possible reconciliation surfaced in the summer of 2021, Harry announced he’s releasing a memoir about his life in the royal family. Meanwhile, some reports say Meghan and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge are close after the birth of Lilibet “Lili” Mountbatten-Windsor in June 2021.
