Prince Philip Gave Princess Eugenie a 1-of-a-Kind Wedding Gift
What do royals get for wedding gifts? Queen Elizabeth II sometimes gifts real estate. She gave her grandson Prince William a Georgian estate when he married Kate Middleton in 2011. As for the queen’s late husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he opted for something smaller when Princess Eugenie wed Jack Brooksbank in 2018.
Prince Philip attended Princess Eugenie’s wedding in 2018
Celebrities packed the guest list for Eugenie’s nuptials, but the royal family came out in full force too. The queen showed up on Oct. 12, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel with the Duke of Edinburgh. They watched, along with William, Kate, and many others, as Eugenie wed Brooksbank.
Previously, royal watchers had wondered about Philip’s attendance because Buckingham Palace hadn’t confirmed he’d be at the royal wedding in the days leading up to the ceremony. But he did indeed attend and was there at Windsor Castle to see his granddaughter get married.
Prince Philip gave Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank a painting he did himself
In the documentary, Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers, some of the people closest to the Duke of Edinburgh — including his children and many of his grandchildren — shared fond memories of him. Initially conceived as a documentary to celebrate Philip turning 100 in June 2021, it became a tribute to his life and legacy following his death on April 9, 2021, at 99.
At one point, Eugenie reflected on the sweet item her late grandfather gave her and Brooksbank as a wedding gift. She shared that Philip gave her a picture of flowers he’d painted himself.
“It was so nice, it’s now sitting in my house in London and I’m so proud of it, you know?” Eugenie said, according to Hello!
Eugenie may have an extra special appreciation for Philip’s painting. Since 2015, she’s worked at an art gallery in London.
Princess Eugenie paid tribute to Prince Philip with her son’s name
Royal watchers guessed the name of Eugenie’s baby before she gave birth on Feb. 9, 2021. When the now-31-year-old announced her son’s name, she revealed she’d paid tribute to her grandfather. Eugenie named her son August Philip Hawke Brooksbank. And, as Eugenie shared in the documentary, she said as much to the Duke of Edinburgh when he met August.
“I brought little August to come and meet him,” Eugenie said. “I told him that we’d named him after him. It was such a lovely moment. We were very lucky to do that.”
The BBC documentary aired on BBC One in the U.K. on Sept. 22, 2021. What about those in the U.S. who want to watch Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers? Unfortunately, at the time of publication, it hasn’t been announced whether the network will air the program stateside. In the meantime, there are other royal family documentaries available to stream.
