Prince William and Kate Middleton Were Not Ready for Brad Pitt’s Dig at Megxit
It has been a good month since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their stunning exit from the royal family, yet Prince William and Kate Middleton still haven’t gotten over the shock of their departure. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appeared at the BAFTAs this year, where several celebrities, including Brad Pitt, poked fun at Megxit. The jokes were well-intended, but experts believe William and Kate were not ready for them.
Prince William and Kate Middleton dazzle at the BAFTAs
William and Kate made a surprise appearance at the BAFTAs this year, which were held inside the Royal Albert Hall in London. The couple walked the red carpet prior to the event, which is basically Britain’s version of the Oscars.
This is the fourth year in a row that William and Kate have attended the award ceremony. This year also marked the 10th year that Prince William has served as the president of the BAFTAs.
When the award ceremony started, William and Kate were seated in the front row. Unfortunately, the two appeared a little tense when Brad Pitt and Rebel Wilson made jokes about Megxit.
Harry and Meghan announced their exit at the beginning of January. The couple is stepping down as senior members of the royal family and are currently living in Canada. The announcement reportedly shocked the royals and based on William and Kate’s reactions at the BAFTAs, it is still a touchy subject.
Wilson poked fun at the royals
There were two notable instances where presenters made jokes about the royal family at the BAFTAs. According to Fox News, royal expert Neil Sean says that Wilson’s jabs at Prince Andrew and Harry were the most offensive to William and Kate.
“The feedback is that many of the stars stepped out of line in front of the patron, which is the Duke of Cambridge,” Sean stated. “William is a huge supporter of films and spoke openly in his speech about the lack of diversity at the awards.”
When Wilson took the stage to present the award for Best Director, she joked about the ceremony being hosted at Andrew and Harry’s palace. The awkward quip did not go over well with the audience.
The cameras also caught Prince William and Kate Middleton’s reaction and the pair looked very uncomfortable with the joke.
A few months ago, Prince Andrew resigned from his royal duties in light of his connections to the pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has also been accused of sleeping with one of Epstein’s sex traffic victims when she was only 17 years old. Andrew has denied all of these allegations.
Brad Pitt gets in a jab
To make things even worse, Pitt also got in a few jokes at the royal family’s expense. Although the actor could not make it to the event, he gave his speech to Margot Robbie, who accepted his award for Best Supporting Actor.
During his speech, Pitt had Robbie thank everyone involved in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He also threw in a few punch lines about what he was going to name his award.
“He says that he is going to name this Harry,” Robbie said on behalf of Pitt. “Because he is really excited about bringing it back to the States with him… His words, not mine!”
Following the joke, the cameras cut to the crowd and it appeared as though everyone enjoyed a good laugh. Sean, however, claims that the footage was edited to make it look like the audience liked the joke.
He added that Prince William and Kate Middleton were assured that they would not be made fun of ever again at the event. Luckily, the couple had a good time at the ceremony, despite the jabs.
How are Prince William and Kate Middleton handling Megxit?
In light of what happened at the BAFTAs, inside sources claim that William and Kate are not handling Megxit very well. Prince William allegedly told a close friend that he never wanted to see Prince Harry leave the royal family and hopes he will be back again someday.
Kate, meanwhile, used to be very close to Harry and is also saddened by his departure. Sources say that she has not reached out to Meghan, mostly because they were never close.
It is unclear what will happen with Harry and Meghan in the coming months. The two are planning on becoming financially independent and will be splitting their time between the UK and Canada.
They are expected to buy a second home in Canada, though there has been some speculation that they might move to Los Angeles instead.
Prince William and Kate Middleton have not commented on the reports surrounding their appearance at the BAFTAs.
