What Prince William Demanded Meghan Markle Not Be Allowed to Wear During Her Wedding to Prince Harry
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed in 2018, Prince William stood alongside his brother as his best man. To those watching from afar things appeared great between the siblings as everyone was all smiles that day. But behind the scenes, trouble was brewing.
As the public later learned, William shared concerns about Harry marrying Meghan so quickly and thought he should take his time and get to know the former Suits star better. This caused friction between the princes because Harry had already made up his mind that Meghan was the one.
So while William wasn’t totally on board with Harry’s decision, it wasn’t his choice. The Duke of Sussex ended up getting the only permission he needed to marry Meghan and that was from Queen Elizabeth II. Now, it’s being reported that William went to the queen as well to get some “assurance” about what he decided Meghan couldn’t wear during her nuptials to Harry inside St. George’s Chapel.
What Prince William said Meghan wasn’t permitted to wear for wedding ceremony
Fans may remember that Meghan wore Princess Diana’s striking aquamarine to the private evening reception after she and Harry tied the knot. However, a royal commentator has claimed that when it came to the actual wedding ceremony broadcast around the world, William wanted to make sure his sister-in-law wasn’t going to be flashing any of his mom’s jewelry.
According to author Robert Jobson, who penned Kate Middleton’s memoir, The Princess of Wales: The Biography, the princes’ relationship quickly deteriorated before the wedding and William went to his grandmother to ensure that Meghan wasn’t going to be wearing any of Diana’s jewelry.
“I have been told that still concerned about the match; [William] sought assurances from the queen that Harry’s bride would not be wearing any of Princess Diana’s jewelry, even though his own wife was allowed to wear it,” Jobson said per Express.
He added: “Despite sharp digs and thin skins on both sides, the wedding at Windsor in May 2018 was a spectacular success. In public, the royal family were all smiles, though privately they were at daggers drawn.”
William had no control over 1 of the duchess’s accessories
Meghan showed off some beautiful accessories when she and Prince Harry said “I do.”
Her “something borrowed” was the stunning bandeau diamond tiara, which was made in 1932 for Queen Mary and loaned to the Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth II.
Meghan’s earrings were “something new” as she debuted those diamond and white gold Galanterie de Cartier studs just a few weeks earlier. She also donned a dramatic Reflection de Cartier diamond bracelet as well as the wedding band Harry slipped on her finger which was made of Welsh gold.
And while William may have blocked Meghan from adding any of his late mother’s jewelry to wear during the ceremony, he couldn’t stop the fact that Meghan did have something of Diana’s on as she and Harry said their vows. That’s because two of the stones in her engagement ring are from the princess’s personal jewelry collection.
