Just about every time we see Prince William out at a royal event or engagement, he’s all smiles. But there have been reports over the years that the Duke of Cambridge always had a bit of a temper. Now a couple of royal experts are discussing that and noting how his wife, Kate Middleton, has helped calm him down.

Here’s more on that, plus the way in which William said he’s changed.

Claims about Prince William’s fiery temper and how Kate keeps him calm

One claim about the future king having a temper came from Robert Lacey’s book Battle of the Brothers. The royal author said that Prince Charles‘ second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, witnessed it when she married William’s father. Lacey alleged that the Duchess of Cornwall was surprised by her stepson’s “ranting and raving.”

“[William was] letting rip with no apparent inhibition in his presence,” Lacey wrote (per Express). “The rows had been earth-shattering by [Camilla’s] account, with William doing the shouting and Charles submitting meekly.”

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward agreed that the Duke of Cambridge had a fiery temper in his younger years but that Kate has since calmed him down. Seward quoted a friend of the couple who previously said: “When William is flying off the handle, it is often Kate who pulls him back. Sometimes William would let the press get to him. Kate would always be the one to say, ‘Let it go.’”

William’s temperament has changed now that he’s a father

Following their marriage in 2011, Prince William and his wife have welcomed three children–Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Seward noted that William’s temperament has really changed since becoming a father.

“Becoming a parent has mellowed him,” Seward told The Telegraph, adding, “William has always had this ability to connect with people. I remember from some of his earliest engagements how much he reminded me of Diana. He’s very natural and not at all fake.”

The Duke of Cambridge admitted that he’s ‘more emotional’ now too

Prince William has acknowledged how much he’s changed since having children as well.

In 2016, he told the BBC: “I’m a lot more emotional than I used to be, weirdly … Now the smallest little things, you well up a little more, you get affected by the sorts of things that happen around the world or whatever a lot more, I think, as a father. Just because you realize how precious life is and it puts it all in perspective. The idea of not being around to see your children grow up and stuff like that.”
