Prince William Has Been Approached to Take Over a Title That Prince Harry Was ‘Devastated’ to Give Up
As a senior royal and future king, Prince William holds a number of titles. According to a new report, he is preparing to take over another one now that Prince Harry has stepped down as a senior working royal. William is set to become the head of the Royal Marines, a title that Harry was “devastated” to give up.
Prince William was angry with Prince Harry over Megxit
A new book titled Battle of the Brothers claims the royal family was extremely angry when Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex decided to make their shocking Megxit announcement before consulting with anyone in the family.
According to Express, Prince William was so angry that he refused to eat lunch with Harry before the Sandringham Summit with Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth. Royal biographer Robert Lacey also claims that Her Majesty felt Harry and Meghan were being “erratic and impulsive.”
As Cheat Sheet previously reported, Harry agreed to stop using his titles and military ranks as part of the exit deal. However, he didn’t officially lose those titles and ranks as they were a gift from the sovereign. The queen reportedly gave Harry and Meghan a transition year. Next spring, the family will reassess the roles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
At first, many royal fans hoped that Harry and Meghan would change their minds and return to the UK. But the couple has since bought a new home in Montecito, California. They also signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix. It doesn’t appear at this point that Harry and Meghan have any plans to return to royal life.
The Duke of Sussex was ‘devastated’ to give up his military rank
Prince Harry served in the military for ten years and rose to the rank of Captain. He also completed two tours in Afghanistan before leaving the Army in 2015. His grandfather, Prince Philip, served as the Captain General of the Royal Marines for 67 years. But he stepped down from the post in 2017 when he retired.
This resulted in Queen Elizabeth appointing the Duke of Sussex as the Captain General. Over the next couple of years, Harry attended a number of ceremonial military engagements. The role was extremely important to him. But he insists he had no choice but to walk away.
Prince Harry spoke with Commandant General Royal Marines, Matthew Holmes, before leaving for America. The duke reportedly told him that he was “devastated” about having to step down.
“I feel I’m letting people down, but I had no choice,” Harry said.
The Duke of Sussex apparently had hopes that he would resume his ceremonial duties next spring. But that won’t happen now that Prince William is taking over the job.
Is Prince William the new head of the Royal Marines because Harry got involved in US politics?
Senior Royal Navy sources have confirmed that Prince William is set to become the new Captain General of the Royal Marines. They believe that Harry’s 12-month review will find “no reason to alter current arrangements.”
According to Express, Harry made a mistake when he appeared with Meghan in a video about the US presidential election. In the clip, the couple encouraged their fans to vote and they also implied an endorsement of Joe Biden.
Sources couldn’t confirm that Harry’s political activity played a role in William taking over the Royal Marines. However, royal expert Richard Palmer believes it was a contributing factor.
“The Sussexes’ intervention in the US presidential election, no matter how carefully worded, was deemed by palace officials to have crossed a line,” Palmer said. “It’s likely to have effects.”
Harry technically still has the rank of Captain General. His agreement with Queen Elizabeth states that “no new appointments will be made to fill these roles before the 12-month review of the new arrangements is completed.”
However, an insider says the decision has been made to invite Prince William to take over the important duty. The Corps is essentially without a Captain General at the moment, and they are ready to fill the role.
