Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have really stepped up to the plate to lead the British royal family into a more modern era. They are being praised for their accessibility and their refreshing candor.

However, the Cambridges were once accused of putting out a Christmas card that lacked warmth.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have made some major changes in the British royal family

Since stepping up as the royal family’s main faces, the Cambridges have tried to shake things up just slightly. With Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry out of the royal fold, the monarchy has been called stiff and unchanging, but with subtle PDA, more candid stories, and focusing on their own passions, the Cambridges have tried to shift that perception.

“Kate and William have been handed more new responsibilities than Charles,” a source told Us Weekly. “The Duke and Duchess are planning to make ‘subtle changes to the monarchy.’ They definitely won’t abolish traditions or anything like that, but that they will become more relaxed. Like the dress code and showing affection in public. They’ll continue being advocates for mental health, which in previous generations is a topic that was rarely discussed.”

Kate Middleton has been more open and accessible

In particular, Kate has really stepped up in the face of Megxit, trying to be more approachable and accessible as she presses toward her future role as Queen Regent.

“Meghan has the warmth and accessibility that Diana had, which are some of the qualities that Harry fell in love with when he met her,” royal expert Leslie Carroll told Express,  “That said — in Meghan’s absence, and particularly during the coronavirus lockdown, Kate has been compelled to step to the forefront a lot more. Even from behind her keyboard and computer screen, she has become more visible and accessible.”

Caroll continued, “She is naturally more diffident than Meghan; the openness with strangers doesn’t come naturally to her, although she can speak candidly on subjects close to her heart, such as parenting.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2017 Christmas card was accused of lacking warmth

In the past few years, the Cambridges have been praised for their laidback and candid Christmas cards. This year’s card showcases the duke and duchess and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, at their country home at Amner Hall. The family is dressed in jeans and sweaters, and Prince Louis’ euphoria grin absolutely steals the spotlight. However, the Cambridges were once accused of lacking warmth.

When the royal couple debuted their 2017 Christmas card, fans were taken aback. The royal couple was dressed in formal color coordinating outfits with their eldest children and posed awkwardly in the photo. Prince Louis was not born yet. Body language expert Judi James told Express,

This is probably the most puzzling Christmas photo, as it lacks warmth, authenticity, and spontaneity, with William and Kate dressed in the kind of business formals that you might expect to see in Canary Wharf rather than a royal home. Even George and Charlotte have been coordinated into the smart blue theme and with William and Kate standing looking huge behind them there is little if any idea of play or fun.

Since the duchess was heavily pregnant with Prine Louis by Dec. 2017, it was also clear that the photo was taken well before the holiday season. It looks like the Cambridges learned from that “over-thought” disastrous affair.
