Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have been together for nearly two decades and have likely showered each other with hundreds of thoughtful gifts during their relationship. But one present the Duke of Cambridge bought his lovely wife when they first started dating wasn’t exactly well-received.

During a recent interview, Prince William recalls the memorable moment he gifted Kate with a present he says was so bad, he thinks it takes the cake for the worst gift ever given.

The most unromantic gift Prince William has ever bought Kate Middleton

While appearing on an episode of The Peter Couch, a podcast on BBC Radio 5 Live, on July 29, Prince William opened up about the time he gave the Duchess of Cambridge a disastrous gift during the early days of their courtship.

“I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once,” the prince confessed. The gift was so bad, the Duke of Cambridge even said, “She’s never let me forget that.”

He continued, “That was early on in the courtship, that was. I tell you what, I think that sealed the deal. She fell for me at that point. I wrapped them. They were really nice. I was trying to convince myself about it. I was like, ‘But these are really amazing, look how far you can see!'”

Prince William went on to share that though the present was a complete dud, he attempted to talk up the gift when he gave it to Kate. However, the Duchess of Cambridge wasn’t exactly impressed with the versatile, magnifying tool.

“She was looking at me going, ‘They’re binoculars, what’s going on?’ It didn’t go well,” Prince William recalled. “Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars.”

Prince William has since upped his gift-giving game

Since giving the Duchess of Cambridge that unromantic present, Prince William has gotten better in the gift department.

Following their seven-year courtship, William proposed to Kate in 2010 with a blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which belonged to his mother, Princess Diana.

In addition to the engagement ring, Prince William also gifted Kate another ring for their wedding made from Welsh gold, following the royal family tradition.

In 2013, the future king of England also gifted his wife with an eternity ring following the birth of their son, Prince George, according to Hello.

The prince has even gifted his kids with memorable presents. While celebrating his oldest son, Prince George’s, birthday on July 22, Prince William bought the little boy a suitable present.

“[William] and Kate surprised the birthday boy with a yurt as his gift, and he received a new bicycle from Charlotte and Louis,” an insider told Us Weekly. “William wants to keep the kids busy over the summer holidays, so he’s planning to build furniture for the yurt with George.”

From what we can tell, Prince William has definitely gotten better at gift-giving over time!
