There’s no denying the fact that weddings are over the top expensive. Between the food, the flowers, and the cost of simply renting the venue, a wedding is an affair for which many people have to save up for years before having.

Celebrity weddings, however, take the expense to an entirely new level. Many of these events cost well into the seven-figure range, and the wedding itself is luxurious beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Some famous couples do tend to tone things down a little, but the royals are one group of people who enjoy going all out when one of them gets married.

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge’s multi-million dollar nuptials were broadcast live around the world, as was the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. There was one wedding that took place almost four decades ago, but to this day, remains one of the most lavish weddings in history.

Here is how Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding cost more than the Sussex and Cambridge nuptials combined.

The wedding of a future king and queen

Prince William waited years before proposing to Kate, and when it finally happened, fans couldn’t have been happier. Thousands of people waited outside Westminster Abbey for hours — some even days — in hopes of catching a glimpse of the bride and groom.

When the big day finally arrived, we have to say that it exceeded just about everyone’s expectations, and, according to Insider, no expense was spared. Kate arrived at the wedding location wearing a stunning dress that cost approximately $400,000, and it doesn’t stop there.

The couple tied the knot in front of 1,900 guests and had not one, but two receptions. The cake alone was $80,000, which comes to over twice the cost of the average wedding for commoners. Add in the massive cost of security, and the total amount for the royal wedding came to over $34 million dollars.

The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

When Prince Harry and Meghan got married in Windsor, England, it was one of the most anticipated weddings in recent history. People all over the world were glued to their television sets to watch the former American actress marry the British prince, and it was so wonderful that many people don’t even take into consideration how much it cost.

According to CNBC, the Sussexes nuptials racked up a bill of over $43 million dollars. While a large portion of that was again, for security, the rest of the event did not come cheaply. Meghan’s dress cost well into the six-figure range, and while fans didn’t get a peek inside the private parties that followed, it is pretty safe to say that only the finest foods and drinks were served.

Both the Sussex and the Cambridge weddings cost a mind-boggling amount of money, yet, neither of them cost as much as the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. When the first in line to the throne wed his first wife, it was one of the most-watched events ever and, in today’s dollars, would have cost about $110 million dollars.

Why so much? Well, the bride’s iconic dress was handmade with a 25-foot train, genuine lace, and was dripping in pearls. The cake alone was over 200 pounds, making it one of the largest of all time, and we also have to take into consideration the cost of carriage rides, food, and other expenses, not to mention the security cost. Looks like Princess Diana and Prince Charles managed to pull out all the stops for their big day!
