As a member of the royal family, Princess Diana had access to some of the most dazzling accessories — including the queen’s collection of antique tiaras. Although the Princess of Wales could borrow (or at least ask to borrow) any Crown Jewel, she often chose the royal family’s Lover’s Knot Tiara or opted for her own family heirloom, the Spencer Tiara.

Throughout her marriage to Prince Charles, Princess Diana wore both tiaras interchangeably to formal affairs like State Banquets. But, which one was her favorite? We take a closer look at both accessories items, plus share Princess Diana’s favorite tiara, ahead.

The Lover’s Knot Tiara

Also known as Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara (and now, Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, as Kate Middleton often opts for the Crown Jewel), this tiara was made famous by the late Princess Diana. According to reports, the queen loaned the family heirloom to the Princess of Wales as a wedding gift. And, although she loved the sparkling accessory, she decided to go with her own family heirloom, the Spencer Tiara for her big day.

Despite not wearing the Lover’s Knot Tiara on her wedding day, Princess Diana took it out for a spin countless times throughout her marriage to Prince Charles and involvement in the royal family. And, now, her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton has done the same.

Made in 1914 for Queen Mary (hence the name), this Crown Jewel features gorgeous pearls and diamonds from the family’s collection that date back before the tiara’s creation. But, it’s not the original Lover’s Knot. According to Town & Country, the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot Tiara is a replica of an original Lover’s Knot tiara that, rumor has it, is hidden in an unknown private collection.

Spencer Tiara

Unlike other women that married into the royal family, Princess Diana came with her own tiara. The Spencer Tiara belongs to her aristocratic family and is the tiara worn by Spencer women on their wedding days — hence why Princess Diana chose it over the Lover’s Knot Tiara. And while many Spencer women have worn the headpiece, it is closely associated with Princess Diana as she often wore it to formal events while married to Prince Charles.

The Spencer Tiara has been in Princess Diana’s family for nearly a century and is made up of bits and pieces of jewelry given to early Spencer women. It boasts stunning swirls of diamonds along with star-shaped centers and a gorgeous heart-shaped focal point. The tiara also has a noticeable headband that appears to be made up of velvet in light tan for maximum comfort — which is definitely a plus when wearing a heavy diamond dazzler like this.

Princess Diana’s favorite tiara

Out of her two most frequented items Princess Diana’s favorite tiara was likely the Spencer Tiara, based on its comfortability. Although she loved the Lover’s Knot Tiara and wore it often, the Spencer Tiara was allegedly much more lightweight and comfortable, which is why she wore it so often.
