Princess Diana knew that her husband Prince Charles was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles very early on. She had her suspicions even before she married Charles. She decided in the end to go through with the marriage, something she may have grown to regret due to the unhappiness she endured.

The truth was blown wide open in Andrew Morton’s biography of the Princess, called Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words. Princess Diana was the secret source for the work and helped shine a light on what life was really like for her. Princess Diana’s marriage wasn’t a happy one. She was forced to endure her husband’s blatant affair while at the same time living up to the impossible standard put on her. The fact that she was the most photographed woman in the world only made things worse.

Diana’s suspicions were there from the start. Charles and Camilla were overly friendly with one another and Camilla seemed to know things that she shouldn’t know. Diana’s first dose of reality came when Camilla had a note delivered to Diana that was written days before her engagement to Prince Charles had been announced. She clearly had already known about it.

“The friendly note invited her to lunch. It was during that meeting, arranged to coincide with Prince Charles’s trip to Australia and New Zealand, that Diana became suspicious. Camilla kept asking if Diana was going to hunt when she moved to Highgrove,” wrote Morton. “Diana later realized that Camilla saw Charles’s love of hunting as a conduit to maintaining her own relationship with him.”

Diana would overhear conversations between Prince Charles and Camilla

On many occasions, Princess Diana would overhear Charles having conversations with Camilla. Before their wedding, Princess Diana was talking with Charles in his study in Buckingham Palace. His phone rang and it was of course Camilla. “Diana wondered whether to sit there or leave and let them make their farewells in private,” Morton wrote. “She left her fiancé alone but told friends afterwards that the episode broke her heart.”

Princess Diana knew all about her husband’s affair

In the famous BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, Princess Diana spoke about her husband’s infamous affair with Camilla Parker Bowles in great detail. “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Diana famously said.

She was very aware of her husband’s affair, but couldn’t do anything about it. “Oh, a woman’s instinct is a very good one,” Diana said in reference to how she knew about Charles’ affair. “Well, I had, obviously I had knowledge of it.” The effect it had on Diana was extreme. She was devastated and her bulimia became what she described as “rampant.”

“Pretty devastating. Rampant bulimia, if you can have rampant bulimia, and just a feeling of being no good at anything and being useless and hopeless and failed in every direction,” Diana revealed. She knew something was going on for a long time, and her husband’s behavior virtually made it obvious. “By the change of behavioural pattern in my husband; for all sorts of reasons that a woman’s instinct produces; you just know,” Diana said.

Prince Charles brought pictures of Camilla Parker Bowles with him on his honeymoon

After the Princess’ wedding, it became even more obvious that something was going on between Charles and Camilla. On the first day of their honeymoon, two pictures of Camilla fell from Charles’ diary as they were each comparing their itineraries for the day.

Charles also wore cufflinks given to him by Camilla on their honeymoon which were inscribed with two letter C’s. This was just a precursor of things yet to come in the unhappy marriage.

Princess Diana was an intelligent woman who was fully aware of her husband’s affair early on. She knew something was going on even before the wedding, and her suspicions were only confirmed as the years went on.
