Princess Diana Once Revealed Queen Elizabeth’s Bizarre Reaction to Prince William’s Birth
There was hardly a time when Princess Diana and Prince Charles were in a happy marriage. The couple became engaged after only 12 dates, and when Diana secretly recorded her life, she revealed that things were far from perfect between the two right from the start.
Diana was proudest of her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. But when she gave birth to William, it wasn’t the exciting moment she’d hoped. Plus, her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, had some striking first words upon meeting her grandson.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles never wanted to marry
When Diana and Charles began dating, Diana went from commoner to royalty in the blink of an eye. It was a lot for her to handle, especially considering Charles didn’t exactly treat her like a princess. His eye was always on Camilla Parker Bowles, though Camilla was already married, and he knew he had to make a quick decision in terms of finding a wife.
After the two wed, things went from bad to worse. Charles and Diana had almost nothing in common, and she once recalled in her recordings to Andrew Morton that any hope of a strong marriage was “slashed” on day two of the couple’s honeymoon. Diana and Charles hardly spoke while honeymooning, setting the stage for more awkwardness — and drama — when they returned to start their royal lives together.
Princess Diana’s details about William’s birth suggest it wasn’t how she wanted
Diana revealed in her recordings that life as a royal was nothing like how it seemed on the outside. And despite the excitement that surrounded the royal relationship, Diana was struggling. She often felt depressed and lacked attention from her husband. At one point, the princess threw herself down the stairs while pregnant with William.
Still, William’s birth was exciting for Diana, despite revealing that it didn’t take place how she wanted. “William had to be induced because I couldn’t take the pressure any longer,” Diana revealed in her recordings.
The other royals arrived at the hospital to meet William, including the queen — but her first words about the little boy were a bit odd. “Thank goodness he hasn’t got ears like his father,” Queen Elizabeth said, according to Diana. Rather than celebrating William’s arrival, the queen seemed focused on her grandson’s appearance.
Diana revealed that William’s birth was scheduled around Charles’ polo hobby
Charles and Diana had been getting on each other’s last nerves for quite a while prior to William’s birth. But she was upset over the fact that, after announcing she wanted to be induced, Charles wouldn’t allow her to give birth without first consulting his polo schedule.
“When we had William, we had to find a date in the diary that suited his polo,” Diana said. Diana added that they eventually came to an agreement on a date where “Charles could get off his polo pony,” joking that she was “very grateful about that!”
William was only 15 when his mother died, but he’s built up a better relationship with his father through the years.
