Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s royal wedding is still talked about years later. They wed in a ceremony of epic proportions which quickly became dubbed the “wedding of the century.”

On July 29, 1981, millions of people watched the nuptials live on TV and thousands crowded the streets around St. Paul’s Cathedral to catch a glimpse of the couple. A wedding of that magnitude came with an equally impressive honeymoon. Ahead, check out forgotten photos from Charles and Diana’s honeymoon.

They honeymooned in the Mediterranean and Scotland

After getting married in a high profile wedding, the newlyweds retreated to the sea for their honeymoon. For two weeks, Charles and Diana sailed through the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

But they weren’t exactly alone. Being on such a large vessel meant having a crew of 200. Plus, naval officers and royal staff joined them onboard.

Embarking on their honeymoon shortly after their nuptials, Charles and Diana took a plane and a train before they boarded the Britannia. See them below at Romney Station.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana argued on their honeymoon

Right from the start, Diana and Charles had a pretty terrible time. They had different ideas about what they’d do on their honeymoon.

Charles brought with him books he hoped to discuss with Diana. Not much of a reader, Diana wasn’t keen on the idea. She thought she and Charles would spend their time at sea talking to each other not reading.

In one instance, when Charles painted on the deck, Diana destroyed his materials because she’d been so furious he hadn’t wanted to spend time together.

To make matters worse, Diana noticed Charles wearing cufflinks given to him by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. They featured intertwined C’s for their names. On another occasion, a photo of Camilla fell out of Charles’ diary when he and Diana were going over their schedules.

Not a promising start to a honeymoon.

They ended their honeymoon at Balmoral Castle

Their honeymoon didn’t start and end with a cruise. The newly minted husband and wife rounded out their honeymoon with a stay at one of Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite royal residences.

Diana and Charles wrapped up their post-wedding festivities at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Diana didn’t enjoy staying there and she reportedly spent her first hours at the estate crying.

When it came time to pose for photos, Charles and Diana hid the fact their honeymoon wasn’t going well. They smiled for photographers standing by the River Dee.

The same thing happened when the couple showed up at the airport in Scotland to head back to England. By the looks of things, they had a wonderful time.
