Princess Diana Said She Cried Like Never Before After Confronting Camilla About Her Affair With Prince Charles
Princess Diana said that one of the bravest things she’s ever done was confronting Camilla Parker Bowles about her affair with Prince Charles. Mustering up all the courage she had, she asked for a moment alone with her husband’s lover so they could have a little “chat.” And despite how terrified Diana was at that moment, she gathered the strength to tell Camilla off. Afterward, the princess said she cried like she had “never cried before.” Keep reading to find out why.
When did Princess Diana find out about Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles?
Sadly, Diana knew about Charles’ affair with Camilla before she even married the Prince of Wales. Weeks before their wedding, she had overheard a phone conversation between Charles and Camilla. During the call, he told his lover, “Whatever happens, I will always love you.” To make matters worse, she found a bracelet that Charles bought just for Camilla. (It had their nicknames engraved on it.)
And because of his love for another woman, Diana desperately wanted to call off the wedding. But her sisters talked her out of it, saying it was “too late to chicken out.”
The Moment Diana Spencer told Camilla Parker Bowles that she knew about her affair with Prince Charles
Years into Diana’s marriage to Charles, the two of them attended one of Camilla’s parties. Charles kept yelling at her the whole way there, telling Diana it wasn’t appropriate for her to attend. Yet, according to Diana’s biography, a voice inside her said, “Go for the hell of it.”
She decided that she wasn’t going to “kiss Camilla hello anymore,” she was going to “shake hands with her instead.”
Yet her defiance didn’t stop there.
In the middle of the party, she went up to Camilla and said, “I’d love to have a word with you if it’s possible.”
According to her biography, “(Camilla) looked really uncomfortable and put her head down.” Diana continues, saying, “We sat down, and I was utterly terrified of her. And I said: ‘Camilla, I would just like you to know that I know exactly what is going on.’ She said: ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ and I said: ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles, and I just want you to know that.’”
Camilla then said to Diana, “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world falling in love with you, and you’ve got two beautiful children. What more could you want?”
Diana said in response, “I want my husband.”
According to her tell-all book, their conversation wasn’t a fight. In fact, it was “deathly calm.”
She then said to Camilla, “I’m sorry I’m in the way. I obviously am in the way, and it must be hell for both of you, but I do know what is going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.”
Princess Diana cried harder than ever before on the way home
On the car ride home, Diana was distraught. After that interaction with Camilla, she let out years of sadness, anger, and frustration in the form of tears.
“In the car, on the way back, my husband was over me like a bad rash, and I cried like I have never cried before,” she said in her biography. “It was anger, it was seven years’ pent-up anger coming out. I cried and cried and cried, and I didn’t sleep that night.”
