Princess Diana’s Former Home Gets Makeover, Fans React
Princess Diana‘s brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, has given fans a glimpse into their family’s Althorp home by sharing photos of the property over the years.
He owns the estate where his sister lived before she married Prince Charles and recently posted a different look of the outside of the house that has many fans talking.
Princess Diana’s former home
Diana was born at Park House in Sandringham, which was a rented property on Queen Elizabeth II’s estate in Norfolk. When she was 14, her family moved to the Althorp House in Northamptonshire.
Diana comes from a long line of aristocrats and the house has been in her family for more than five centuries. The massive Spencer family home has 90 rooms, sits on 550 acres, and is surrounded by an estate of 13,000 acres.
The Princess of Wales visited Althorp often after she wed Charles and was said to love the grounds and house. Today, she is buried on the property. Her grave is located on an island in the middle of the estate’s Round Oval lake.
Charles Spencer shares photo of lit-up estate
On July 6, Diana’s sibling shared a photo of the Althorp House looking quite different than how fans normally see it.
Spencer posted a photo of himself on Instagram standing in front of the residence which was completely lit up in all red lights. He captioned it, “Delighted to have [Althorp] join the #lightitinred campaign this evening, saluting the enormous contribution that live events and entertainment make to the U.K., culturally and financially.”
Hundreds of theaters, concert venues, and other entertainment establishments in the U.K. lit up red to highlight the devastating impact the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has had on the events industry. The campaign was created by Clearsound Productions Ltd. and Backstage Theatre Jobs.
Fans applaud photo
Many royal fans flooded the comments section of Spencer’s post to express how different, but beautiful, the home looked lit up red.
“House looks stunning. A worthy cause,” one follower wrote.
“Wow gorgeous… looks like New Delhi on Independence Day,” another person opined.
“Very cool picture of you[r] amazing home,” a third said.
“Well done. And thank you,” another fan posted.
The photo quickly garnered over 1,300 likes.
Diana’s younger brother has owned the residence since 1992.
In an interview with The Telegraph Prince William and Prince Harry’s uncle said he will likely follow the practice of male primogeniture and leave the property to his eldest son, Viscount Louis Spencer. Spencer has six other children–Lady Kitty and twins Lady Eliza and Lady Amelia with his first wife Victoria Aitken, Hon Edmund and Lady Lara with second wife Caroline Freud, and Lady Charlotte with current wife Karen Villeneuve.
Althorp sees an average of 20,000 visitors each year who tour the property and pay tribute at a separate memorial site to Spencer’s sister.
