Princess Eugenie Could ‘Go All Out’ to Try and Heal Rift Between the Sussexes and Royal Family, Says Queen’s Former Press Secretary
Princess Eugenie, the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, has retreated to Scotland with the rest of the royals to join Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral. But when she returns home it’s thought that she is going to try and heal the rift between Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and the rest of royal family.
Here’s what the queen’s former press secretary and a royal expert think could happen with that.
Eugenie is close with her cousin Prince Harry and was friends with Meghan before the duchess even met him
It’s been reported over the years that Princess Eugenie is extremely close with her cousin Prince Harry. In the book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand touched on how Harry and Eugenie have always been super tight over the years.
“Eugenie had always been more than just a cousin to Harry. They were also the closest of friends,” Scobie and Durand wrote. “Out of all the queen’s grandchildren, Harry and Eugenie have one of the most natural connections. Like Harry, Eugenie is loyal, honest, and great fun.”
During her sitdown with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that she also had a very good relationship with Eugenie that began before she even started dating her future husband. “Eugenie and I had known each other before I had known Harry,” Meghan said.
Given that fact, many believe if there’s anyone who can help heal the major rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the royals it’s Eugenie.
Eugenie will have to ‘go all out’ to try and bridge the divide between the Sussexes and the rest of the family
Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter spoke about what the princess would need to do to help bridge the divide between all the parties.
“If she feels she can do something to heal the rift then she is going to go all out to do it,” Arbiter said (per Express). “But it is going to take a lot more than Eugenie because there are other members of the family. You have to remember that Harry has rubbished his father saying he was cut off but he wasn’t cut off financially. He has kind of rubbished his brother, by implication he has rubbished his granny, so there is a lot of work to do.”
Arbiter then opined: “I don’t think Eugenie can do it by herself.”
Expert says the princess’s efforts may all be for nothing
Royal expert Phil Dampier agreed that the princess alone won’t be able to heal this family rift.
He told The Sun: “I personally don’t think there’s much Eugenie can do at the moment to heal the rift. I think the rift is too deep for her to play a major role in healing it. I don’t think there is much chance of a reconciliation between anyone at the moment and I wouldn’t have thought Eugenie is in a position to [help] — even though she is matey with [the Sussexes].”
