(Royal) kids say the darndest things. Meghan Markle revealed during her and Prince Harry’s Nigeria trip what their soon-to-be 3-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet, told her just weeks earlier. Ahead, what Lilibet said to the Duchess of Sussex, 42. Plus, how Meghan interpreted the comment “in a different way.”

Lilibet saw her reflection in Meghan’s eyes

During the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s time in Nigeria from May 10-12, 2024, which also happened to be Mother’s Day weekend, Meghan made a rare comment about her and Harry’s daughter.

Lilibet, along with her 5-year-old brother, Prince Archie, are kept largely out of the spotlight as they grow up in Montecito, California. (Although that may change with Meghan’s new Netflix show drops.)

So when Meghan name-dropped Lilibet in Nigeria, it was a rare treat. While visiting a school, Meghan recalled an observation the 2-year-old made.

Referring to “our daughter, Lili,” Meghan noted how “she’s much tinier than you guys, about to turn three,” per People. (Lilibet’s birthday is on June 4.)

“A few weeks ago,” the American Riviera Orchard founder continued, “she looked at me and saw her reflection in my eyes.”

“She said, ‘Mama, I see me in you.’ Now, she was talking literally, but I held onto those words in a different way,” Meghan went on.

“I thought, ‘Yes, I do see me in you, and you see me in you.’ But as I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well.”

Meghan also described Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet as ‘very chatty, sweet children’ in Nigeria

Archie and Lilibet anecdotes were in no short supply on the Sussex Nigeria trip. Elsewhere during the three-day visit, Meghan once again made a nod to her and Harry’s kids.

During a Women in Leadership event she co-hosted with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization, Meghan spoke about her “very chatty, sweet children.”

“I love being a mom,” she said (via Hello). Long before becoming one, she asked her “mentor” Bonnie Hammer, an NBCUniversal executive, about finding “balance.” Hammer’s answer? It’ll “never” happen.

“This was before I was married, before I had children, before all the things in my life have certainly had a plot twist,” Meghan explained. “And it struck me, and it stayed with me for a long time.”

“Because you say, ‘Well, how can you be so successful? And she’s a mother as well, and she’s married and say that you’ll never find the balance? What does life feel like if it’s imbalanced?’” Today, she interprets the comment as meaning, “balance will always change for you.”

“So, being a mom has always been a dream of mine,” she concluded. “And I’m so fortunate that we have two beautiful, healthy, very chatty, sweet children.”

Meghan’s ‘doing great’ as she and Prince Harry’s kids ‘grow up and evolve’

More about Lilibet and Archie. Meghan yet again gave an update on her family life as the Nigeria tour came to a close. She told People, that she, Harry, Archie, and Lilibet are “really happy” in California.

“We’re just doing great,” Meghan told the publication. “And happy to be watching our family grow up and evolve. Of course, I’m happy. We’re really happy.”

Meghan also noted her excitement at being “able to share” what she learned about her Nigerian “heritage” with Archie and Lilibet. (She previously revealed on Archetypes that a DNA test showed she’s 43% Nigerian.)

“That’s such a special thing as a mother to know you can do,” Meghan said.
