Why Priyanka Chopra’s Age Gap With Nick Jonas Is Actually Perfect
Everybody is excited for Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, who got engaged after a whirlwind romance. Jonas recently told Jimmy Fallon that “we sort of jumped right in and we’re very happy.” But if you heard that the couple got engaged on Chopra’s 36th birthday, then you may find yourself wondering about Priyanka Chopra’s age. Nick Jonas is, quite famously, the youngest of the Jonas brothers. And there’s a significant age gap between Chopra and her fiancé, which many fans have criticized.
A notable age gap in a relationship isn’t for everybody. But we can think of several reasons why the situation is actually perfect for Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas.
Priyanka Chopra’s age is 36, and Nick Jonas’s age is 25
Priyanka Chopra is currently 36 years old. She was born on July 18, 1982, in Jamshedpur, India. Nick Jonas, on the other hand, is 25, almost 26. He was born on September 16, 1992, in Dallas, Texas. That means that there’s about a 10-year age gap between the two. While we don’t think that’s grounds for criticism, we can sort of see where fans might raise an eyebrow.
FiveThirtyEight reports that the average age difference between a heterosexual couple is 2.3 years. And typically, the man is older than the woman. In fact, the publication reports that the man is older in 64% of heterosexual couples. In 23%, the woman is older. And in the remaining 13%, the partners are less than 12 months apart in age. So Nick Jonas’s and Priyanka Chopra’s ages do make them an outlier.
Nick Jonas loves that Priyanka Chopra is older than he is
Fans have criticized the 10-year age gap between Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. But Jonas says that it doesn’t bother him at all. In fact, a source told People that “The age difference is not a big deal to them whatsoever. Nick loves dating older women, and if anything it makes Priyanka even more attractive to him.” People reports that some fans might feel surprised to see him settling down at age 25. Nonetheless, the publication’s source characterizes him as “an old soul.” The source also says that Jonas has “always been very mature for his age.”
The evidence seems to support that statement. (At least the part about Jonas’s tendency to date older women!) Before his romance with Chopra, Jonas dated Olivia Culpo for nearly two years. And he was also linked to Kate Hudson. According to Harpers Bazaar, fans also speculated that Jonas was flirting with Jenna Dewan.
But Jonas was drawn to Chopra for more than just her age
Of course, Harpers Bazaar reports that Nick Jonas loves Priyanka Chopra for reasons beyond her age. An insider explained of the musician’s opinion of his actress fiancée, “He obviously thinks she’s beautiful, but he’s also drawn to her intelligence.” The source added, “She has this charisma and energy that draws you to her, and she’s fit in so well with his friends and family.”
The couple became engaged after two months of dating. And Jonas supposedly proposed on Chopra’s birthday, which they celebrated in London. According to Bazaar, Jonas even closed down an entire Tiffany & Co. store so that he could the engagement ring.
Plus, their families both approve
The families of the future bride and groom can sometimes prove tough to convince about the match. But it doesn’t sound like Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have that problem at all. As Jonas told Jimmy Fallon, the couple actually held off on confirming rumors about their engagement until their families could meet in Mumbai for a traditional Roka ceremony. This pre-wedding ceremony “marks the union of both the bride and groom’s family and friends,” The Sun reports.
Jonas answered some questions from Fallon about it. “Basically it’s a confirmation from both sides of the family that they approve of the engagement, and then there’s some beautiful prayers and connection just for the family to have a chance to meet and hang out and get to know each other,” Jonas explained. “It’s really incredible, we both left that ceremony full of joy.” If anyone would take issue with the age gap, it would be Chopra and Jonas’s families. But it doesn’t sound like anybody has reservations!
Making a relationship work just requires having enough in common
Psychology Today reports that “Results are certainly mixed” when it comes to studies on whether relationships with a big age gap can last. Plus, “Research from 2017 out of the University of Colorado shows that both men and women who marry younger than themselves are often initially happier, but see a sharper decline in satisfaction over time.” However, the publication concludes that “Making it work is really about having enough in common to bond, enough difference to learn from each other, and similar views on partnerships.”
Plus, Psychology Today also has a few words for women who, like Priyanka Chopra, find themselves in a relationship with a much younger partner. “Oh, and women who fall for younger men? Feel free to ignore the stigma. Not only is it an annoying double standard, even that recent University of Colorado research showed women dating younger men saw some of the highest satisfaction levels.”
Age is just a number
Harper’s Bazaar, reporting that you can find many celebrity couples with significant age differences between them, notes that age is just a number. And that’s an important thing to keep in mind, whether in your own life or when following celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. An age gap, even a significant one, may not matter when you find the right person.
Couples such as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, George and Amal Clooney, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, or Jay-Z and Beyoncé deal with age gaps even bigger than the one between Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. (Ryan Reynolds has 11 years on Blake Lively. George Clooney is 17 years older than Amal Clooney. Ellen DeGeneres has 15 years on Portia de Rossi. And Jay-Z is 12 years older than Beyoncé.) Clearly, an age difference isn’t a deal-breaker when you find someone you love.
