‘Prodigal Son’ Star Bellamy Young ‘Heartbroken’ After News of Cancellation
Bellamy Young plays the fierce Jessica Whitly on FOX’s Prodigal Son. In light of the series’ recent cancellation, the actor took to social media and shared her emotional reaction.
‘Prodigal Son’ was canceled by FOX
Prodigal Son, which debuted on FOX in the fall of 2019, stars Tom Payne as Malcolm Bright, a profiler who works with the NYPD. Michael Sheen plays his serial killer father, The Surgeon, aka Martin Whitly, and Young portrays his mother, Jessica. The series also stars Halston Sage, Lou Diamond Phillips, Alan Cummings, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Just a week before the season 2 finale, FOX announced it is canceling the series. The network hasn’t revealed why, but the decision likely has to do with the show’s dwindling ratings.
According to TV Line, in season 2, Prodigal Son averaged 2 million weekly viewers with a 0.4 demo rating. Compared to the first season, the viewership numbers have seen a decline of nearly 45 percent.
Bellamy Young is ‘heartbroken’ over ‘Prodigal Son’ cancellation news
The cancellation news came as a surprise to many, including Young, who took to social media to share her reaction. She thanked the fans for their love and support and admitted feeling a little heartbroken.
“I’m not ready to say goodbye yet, so join me tonight for the second to last #ProdigalSon,” Young wrote in a tweet. “These last two episodes are insane- & this one tonight brought me to tears. Can’t wait for you to see where it all goes. Hope everybody’s having a beautiful day. I’m sending each of you so much love!”
“Just wanted to pop on & say THANK YOU, wonderful #Prodigies, for sharing this adventure with us,” the Prodigal Son star added in a follow-up tweet. “I am, as you can imagine, heartbroken that we can’t keep telling this story. We’re gonna go out in STYLE tho — Love each of you. So much.”
‘Prodigal Son’ fans are hoping the show gets saved
After seeing Lucifer get canceled by Fox and then picked up by Netflix, some Prodigal Son fans hope the series finds the same luck.
“They did this with Lucifer too, and I was so disappointed (thankfully it got picked up),” a Reddit user wrote. “So I’m really really really hoping that someone will pick this show up.”
“This is the first show in a long time that I really enjoyed,” another Redditor shared. “This is why I’d rather find shows that are finished or at least a couple of seasons in. I don’t like to suffer, lol. Hopefully, HBO Max or Netflix pick it up.”
Many fans are sharing the hashtag #SaveProdigalSon on Twitter. And some have drafted an online petition in hopes FOX will change their mind and renew the show.
The season 2 / series finale will air Tuesday, May 18 on FOX.
