Food Network star Rachael Ray is known for providing home cooks with incredible tips on how to get a meal ready in under 30 minutes. She became a household name in the cooking world and expanded her reality TV empire with the Rachael Ray Show, which aired for 17 seasons. Ray recently launched a podcast in which she got candid about her and her husband’s communication style. Before discussing her husband on the air, she was caught scolding him at a Food Network event. Here’s what happened.

Rachael Ray scolded her husband, John Cusimano, at a Food Network event in October 2024

Food Network fans have witnessed Rachael Ray on their TVs for nearly 20 years. While the home cook loves to share her kitchen tips with fans, she’s become more candid recently regarding her relationship with her husband, John Cusimano. She and Cusimano met in 2001 at a friend’s birthday party and tied the knot in 2005. In 2025, they’ll celebrate 20 years of marriage.

In October 2024, Ray launched her new podcast, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead. She explained how she and Cusimano “don’t calm it down” when they get into arguments.

“It’s very hard, especially for hot-tempered or creative or vociferous loud people to be able to just calm it down,” she said. “John and I don’t calm it down ever. We have huge screaming matches all the time, but I think that’s healthy. I really do. And I don’t trust people that are too quiet.”

Ray added that she and her husband never directly apologize to each other, either. “Eventually I pat him on his a** or he kisses me on the head, and that’s just sort of it,” she explained. “That’s the apology. It’s just sort of understood.”

Days before the revealing podcast episode, Ray and Cusimano appeared at her annual Burger Bash event at the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival. The U.S. Sun notes she appeared annoyed when she couldn’t locate Cusimano. “I don’t know where my husband got off to, but I’m glad all of you are here,” she told the crowd.

Toward the end of the evening, she called her husband out in front of the crowd yet again. “Honey, what did you do with the last of the hats?” she asked him before scolding, “I thought you were going to throw some hats out. Cusimano then ran off stage to grab the hats after shouting for someone else to locate them.

The Food Network star admitted that she and John Cusimano have ‘volatile personalities’

Rachael Ray isn’t afraid to get candid when talking about her relationship with her husband. While some fans might worry about what she revealed on her podcast, she previously explained how she and John Cusimano “balance each other” despite their “volatile personalities.”

“We have volatile personalities, but we’re both very practical, too,” Ray told People in September 2021. “That’s the lawyer side of him and the domestic side of me. We’re like, ‘These are the things that must be accomplished today. And we will get to this only by doing what work is necessary.'”

Ray added that she and Cusimano know exactly who they are and don’t take it personally when they “vent or blow up” at each other. “We’re very good at being quiet, also, with each other,” she continued. “We don’t look for there to be constant chatter. And we’re very good with giving each other space to work on our passions.”

Rachael Ray once called out tabloid rumors claiming her husband cheated

While Rachael Ray fans might be concerned with her marriage, it appears she and John Cusimano have a romance that works for them. Ray once talked about the tabloid rumor that insisted that Cusimano cheated on her with two women.

“I think they said six actually,” she told People. “I’ve known where he is every night since we’ve been married.”

While Cusimano has spent late nights playing with his band, Cringe, he noted that the place he’s “happiest is curled up in bed with Rachael and the puppy.”

“We’re very turtlelike,” Ray added. “We listen to music, pour a glass of wine, and watch Law & Order.”
