The Reason Prince Harry ‘Had a Look of Bitterness’ on His Face During Trip to Nigeria With Meghan
Even though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their duties and roles within the royal family, they recently embarked on a trip that closely resembled an official royal tour.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were invited to Nigeria by the country’s chief of defense staff to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. Video footage and photos from the couple’s three-day visit show Meghan beaming from ear to ear during her interactions, however, many of the photos show Harry with a “look of bitterness” much of the time.
Now, a royal expert is explaining what the reason is for the prince’s expression.
Why Prince Harry looked ‘bitter’ in Nigeria with Meghan despite successful trip
In May, Meghan and Harry visited the West African nation to promote the Invictus Games and also champion their Archewell Foundation’s mental health initiatives for young people.
Since many royal watchers and fans deemed Harry and Meghan’s “unofficial tour” a success, some are left wondering why the prince actually looked “bitter” in a number of photos including the duke’s biographer Angela Levin. She said there were some moments when Harry looked like he “would explode with anger and bitterness.”
Royal expert Tom Quinn offered a reason for that explaining that the trip was viewed as a “kind of failure” for Harry.
He told The Mirror: “Harry and Meghan see their recent trip to Nigeria as a huge success, but for Harry, every success is another kind of failure while his family refuses to acknowledge his efforts and steadfastly refuse to apologize for everything that had happened in the past. In Nigeria and even with Meghan at his side and regularly holding his hand he still has a permanent look of bitterness on his face.”
Sussexes accused of trying to ‘control the narrative’ during their ‘unofficial tour’
Although several photos were released of the duke with a “permanent look of bitterness on his face” the Sussexes tried to “control the narrative” of what pictures would be released from their trip, according to a royal author.
Gareth Russell told GB News that Meghan and Harry tried doing so by bringing along their own photographer Misan Harriman, who is also good friends with Meghan.
“The Sussexes have shown themselves to be very concerned with controlling the narrative,” Russell said. “Taking their own photographer allows them a great deal of control over what images are circulated on images they choose. I do think the choice of photographer was a deliberate one.”
Some of the images Harriman captured and shared via social media include Harry visiting a military veteran at the Amputee hospital in Kaduna.
Harriman captioned the post: “A profoundly powerful moment today at the Amputee hospital in Kaduna. The Duke of Sussex with a Nigerian military veteran. Photographed by me.” Some compared the image with those of the prince’s late mother, Princess Diana, visiting AIDS victims in hospitals.
