The Reason Prince Harry Made Kate Middleton Cry on Her Wedding Day
Weddings can be pretty stressful, and sometimes those involved in the big event end up in tears. Royal fans may recall reports that leading up to Meghan Markle‘s wedding, the bride made Kate Middleton cry during a dress fitting. The Duchess of Sussex later claimed that the Princess of Wales actually made her cry. Even if Meghan didn’t make Kate cry, Prince Harry apparently did.
Here’s what a royal author has said about the reason Prince Harry made Kate cry on her wedding day.
Prince Harry was the best man and ring bearer at Prince William and Kate’s wedding
Prince William and Kate tied the knot during a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. The couple said “I do” in front of around 2,000 guests and millions more watching across the globe.
The Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge tapped his younger brother to be not just his best man but also the ring bearer that day. Harry’s military uniform was fitted with a special pocket for the safekeeping of the ring.
One of the many memorable moments from the royal wedding was when Kate was walking down the aisle to meet the groom, and Harry turned around to look at the bride and let William know she looked lovely, whispering: “Wait ’til you see her.”
Why Prince Harry made Kate Middleton cry at the wedding reception
Following the pair’s nuptials, there was a lunchtime reception at Clarence House before another reception at Buckingham Palace that evening.
At many receptions, the best man gives a speech, and Prince Harry did just that. According to royal author and commentator Katie Nicholl, Harry’s words cued quite a few tears to flow from some in attendance, including the bride.
In the biography Harry: Life, Loss and Love, Nicholl revealed how touching Harry’s best man speech was. “It was affectionate, warm, and funny and touched William deeply,” she wrote (per Express). “And when he said the couple’s decade-long romance was his inspiration… Kate shed a tear.”
Nicholl added that “At one point, Harry is said to have called William ‘the perfect brother’ and said he loved Kate ‘like a sister.'”
Prince Harry got his wish
When Harry spoke about William and Kate’s relationship being something he aspired to have, it was in the presence of his then-girlfriend Chelsey Davy. The Duke of Sussex’s relationship with Davy didn’t last, but he did find love again.
On May 19. 2018, Harry married Meghan Markle, with Prince William serving as his best man.
Today, Meghan and Harry have two children and are living in California after stepping down as senior royals in 2020.
