Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock ‘Struggled’ and Argued Through 1 Important Process

Before Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock married and eventually divorced, they took on a massive project together that they “struggled” and argued the whole way through. As McEntire noted in her autobiography Reba: My Story, she and Blackstock have always had different personalities. One might presume she feels they are more dissimilar now than ever since they’ve divorced, but it was something she knew even at the beginning of their romance.

“Narvel says there’s not an impractical bone in my body and not a practical one in his,” she explained.

So, when the couple purchased their first home and began planning renovations, they learned some new things about each other. McEntire pointed out, “Where I tend toward simplicity, Narvel wanted decorating schemes that I thought were just a little elaborate.”

The “Fancy” singer noted that remodeling a house is tough sometimes, no matter how in love a couple might be. And their different tastes caused them to struggle through the entire process.

McEntire shared a few of the issues she and Blackstock found with each other in renovating their home. “… Narvel and I argued through it all,” she offered. They would go into a store to look at paints but before long they’d be shouting at each other on public sidewalks.

Then, they’d agree to behave and go back in for more shopping. But something else would set them off. McEntire wrote, “We struggled to pick out doorknobs, windows, trims, faucets, bathtubs, doors, lighting fixtures — all of it.”

They thought they knew each other well, having met each other and worked together for years before they became romantic. But embarking on the journey of choosing and remodeling a home allowed them to learn how compromise is important to making any relationship last.

Eventually, McEntire and Blackstock came to an agreement to see their way through their project in a way that was fair to both of them.

“If I liked something and he didn’t, we passed,” she shared. “If he liked something and I didn’t, we passed. The only time we bought anything was when we both agreed on it.”

They grew so good at working together that they shopped for furnishings for their new home while they were on tour. McEntire shared that Blackstock would drive them around different cities looking for furniture stores. “He got pretty good at maneuvering that big, forty-foot bus around parking lots!” she proudly shared.

Furniture shopping wasn’t exclusive to McEntire’s tour in the United States, either. “… We bought a huge canopy bed that had to be shipped from London,” she noted.

After all that work, the “Walk On” singer sold the home following her divorce from Blackstock. It’s now available for special events and parties.
