Rebel Wilson to Star in Her First Non-Comedy Role in ‘The Almond and the Seahorse’
Rebel Wilson is known for her immense comedic talent. But the Australian actor is taking on her first dramatic role in the upcoming movie, The Almond and the Seahorse.
Rebel Wilson started her career as a comedic actor
In her early career, Wilson trained at the legendary comedy institution, The Second City. She then appeared in several Australian series and films, including Pizza, The Wedge, and Ghost Rider.
Wilson’s first Hollywood role came in Judd Apatow’s 2011 hit comedy, Bridesmaids. In the film, she portrayed Brynn, the roommate of Kristen Wiig’s character, Annie. She then starred in popular projects like Workaholics and What to Expect When You’re Expecting.
In 2012, Wilson landed the role of Amy in Pitch Perfect. Her performance earned her numerous accolades, including the MTV Movie Award for Best Actor in a Movie.
Wilson has since become a notable comedic presence in Hollywood. She’s appeared in dozens of blockbuster movies, including Isn’t It Romantic, The Hustle, and Jojo Rabbit.
Rebel Wilson takes on her first dramatic role in ‘The Almond and the Seahorse’
Wilson is taking a detour from comedy and taking on her first dramatic movie role. As reported by Deadline, she will appear opposite Celyn Jones in Oscar-nominated cinematographer Tom Stern’s upcoming film, The Almond and the Seahorse.
The drama, which was co-written by Jones and Kaite O’Reilly, tells the story of an architect and archeologist trying to move on with their lives after a brain injury leaves them disconnected from their loved ones.
The Almond and the Seahorse cast also features Charlotte Gainsbourg, Meera Syal, and Trine Dyrholm. Production and shooting took place in North Wales, Merseyside, and Liverpool from late 2020 to summer 2021. A release date has yet to be announced.
The actor suggests she wouldn’t have gotten ‘The Almond and the Seahorse’ role before her transformation
During the pandemic lockdown, Wilson documented her “health transformation” on social media. And in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor suggested she may not have landed this dramatic role before the transformation.
“I found that with the British drama The Almond and the Seahorse,” Wilson said. “I’m not sure I would have been cast in that when I was a bigger girl because they kind of stereotype you a bit more when you’re bigger.”
The 42-year-old revealed that she always imagined herself as a dramatic actor, and will continue to pursue more serious projects. But that doesn’t mean Wilson is giving up on comedy.
“When I started as an actress I really wanted to be the next Dame Judi Dench and do really serious stuff,” she admitted. “And so now I’m returning to that a bit, which is great but still doing comedies that I love. But yeah, it has definitely diversified my stocks.”
Wilson will host the 2022 British Academy of Film and TV Arts (BAFTA) Awards on March 13. Her next comedy, Senior Year, is slated to hit Netflix on May 13, 2022.
