Reese Witherspoon didn’t think she’d get remarried following her highly publicized divorce from Ryan Phillippe. Then her now ex-husband, Jim Toth, entered her life and convinced her to give marriage another shot. How the talent agent, 54, did it, ahead.

Jim Toth showed Witherspoon ‘what a good partner is’

In a February 2012 Elle cover interview, the Big Little Lies star opened up about meeting Toth “out of the blue” at a friend’s house. Calling him a “really good person,” Witherspoon recalled how she didn’t think she’d marry again but Toth’s actions made her reconsider.

“Jim said, ‘I’m gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I’m going to take care of you. I’m gonna do this so much that you’re gonna get used to it,’” she recalled.

“I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ I’ve never had anybody like that in my life,’” Witherspoon added. She and Toth became engaged in December 2010 before marrying in March 2011.

In March 2023, just two days before what would’ve been their 12-year wedding anniversary, Witherspoon and Toth took to Instagram to share their decision to split

“We have some personal news to share…It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” they said in a joint statement. “We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”

The former couple, who share a 12-year-old son, Tennessee, settled their divorce by August 2023. As for the reason behind their split, a source told Us Weekly Witherspoon and Toth had a “very healthy relationship and a lot of great times.” However, “like a lot of couples, they grew apart.”

Walking down the aisle for a third time doesn’t interest the Legally Blonde alum, an insider told Daily Mail. That’s why she’s made it clear to her rumored boyfriend, Oliver Haarmann, a 57-year-old businessman, that marriage is not an option.

“At 48, Reese doesn’t plan to have any more children,” the source said. “She’s also independent as hell and certainly doesn’t need a man for his money.” (Witherspoon has an estimated net worth of $440 million.)

“The reason she’s told Oliver ‘no’ to marriage,” they explained, “is because she doesn’t want him to have false expectations and think this is in their future. Because it definitely isn’t.”

For now, the Oscar winner is “having fun” with the father of two after returning to the dating world. Their time together has included dinner in New York—one with Witherspoon’s 21-year-old son, Deacon Phillippe, whom she shares with Phillippe in addition to 25-year-old daughter Ava—and a helicopter ride to the city.
