Relationship Timeline: Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams dated from 2005-2007. And although their romance was short-lived, the stars of The Notebook shared an incredibly deep, passionate relationship. Gosling has even gone so far as to say his relationship with McAdams was “a hell of a lot more romantic” than The Notebook. Find out everything you need to know about the ex-Hollywood pair, and what ultimately led to their split.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams star in ‘The Notebook’
Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Notebook, was adapted into a movie in 2004. The film was a hit for hopeless romantics, and girlfriends across the globe were forcing their boyfriends to come see it with them. The movie, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, centers around Allie and Noah, who are madly in love with one another. Yet even though they consider themselves soul mates, they argue 24/7 throughout the film.
As it turns out, McAdams and Gosling had a very similar relationship to the characters they were portraying on-screen. According to the film’s director, Nick Cassavetes, the two would fight constantly. It’s eerily similar to the characters in the film, which emphasizes how Allie and Noah “didn’t agree on much” but were ultimately “crazy about each other.”
Cassavetes goes into further detail about their heated relationship in an interview with VH1.
“They were not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and 150 people are standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here.’ And he’s doing a scene with Rachel, and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’” Luckily, Gosling would end up “getting” one of the great loves of his life.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams started to date long after filming
Perhaps McAdams and Gosling missed the steamy relationship dynamic they shared while filming The Notebook because long after they wrapped up filming, they decided to give each other another shot. “I don’t know what happened,” Gosling tells E! in regards to how they went from enemies to lovers. “Two years later, I saw her in New York, and we started getting the idea that maybe we were wrong about each other.” So they decided to give their relationship a try, and according to the actors, it was a bond filled with love and support.
McAdams confesses to The Times that she never expected their relationship to turn romantic. “[Our later relationship] certainly wasn’t something that either of us had expected would come out of that filmmaking experience,” she says. “Which goes to show you that you can engineer chemistry on-screen just by telling the audience that these two people love each other. And, unless your actors are doing a really terrible job, I think people will want to see that. As an actor, you don’t have to feel it. You don’t have to feel anything. Just imagine it.”
What led to Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling’s split
As most of us know, fame and secure relationships don’t always go hand in hand. This is why it’s rare when Hollywood couples last for more than a few years. And unfortunately, fame is what destroyed Gosling and McAdams’ relationship. When Gosling was asked whether or not he and his The Notebook co-star were still dating, he responds with “No idea.” He then tells GQ, “show business is the bad guy” in regards to romantic relationships. “When both people are in show business, it’s too much show business. It takes all of the light, so nothing else can grow.”
