It’s the end of an era. Blue Bloods comes to an end on Dec. 13, with a series finale episode that’s sure to leave loyal fans wanting more. As viewers prepare to say goodbye to the Reagan family, let’s look back at where it all began for Frank, Danny, Jamie, Erin, and the rest of the show’s characters.

Blue Bloods premiered on Sept. 24, 2010, on CBS. The pilot introduced the various members of the Reagan family, a New York City clan with deep ties to law enforcement. Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) is the NYPD commissioner, a position previously held by his father, Henry Reagan (Len Cariou).

Frank’s son Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), is a police detective who sometimes crosses the line in the pursuit of justice. His daughter Erin (Bridget Moynahan) is an assistant district attorney. Jamie (Will Estes), the youngest Reagan, is a rookie cop who attended Harvard Law before deciding to become a police officer.

In the first episode of Blue Bloods, Jamie graduates from the police academy and joins the NYPD. The same day, a nine-year-old girl is abducted on her way home from school. Danny is assigned to investigate her disappearance.

Thanks to some determined police work, Danny and his partner are able to bring the girl home safe and nab the perp. But Danny’s questionable interrogation techniques mean the kidnapper will be released without being charged. (Evidence eventually links him to a murder in Florida, where he’s sent to face charges.) Erin, who is handling the case, warns her brother that his tendency to cross the line means that a bad guy will end up free to harm another little girl. The tension between the siblings boils over at the first of the Reagan family’s regular Sunday dinners.

Meanwhile, two FBI agents approach Jamie about joining an investigation of the Blue Templar, a secret society of rogue cops. At first, he tries to blow them off. But then they reveal that his late brother Joe, also a cop, was working with them to infiltrate the group. When the Templars discovered he was a mole, they had him killed. Jamie is torn – he wants to find out what happened to his brother, but working with the FBI would put him in a difficult position as both an NYPD officer and with his own family. The feds point out that they don’t know how far up the corruption goes, which means confiding in Frank about his dilemma is not an option.

The Blue Templar investigation is an ongoing storyline throughout Blue Bloods Season 1. The premiere leaves open the possibility that both Frank and Danny could be tied to the group. However, that turns out not to be the case. Eventually, the Reagans work together to take down the group and discover who killed Joe.

The Blue Bloods series finale airs Friday, Dec. 13 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. It will also stream on Paramount+.
