‘RHOA’: Kandi Burruss Reveals How She Knew Marlo Hampton Before the Show
Marlo Hampton and Kandi Burruss went from being on-screen enemies to close friends throughout their time on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Despite their rocky history on the show, both revealed they were acquaintances long before reality television.
Marlo Hampton dated one of Kandi Burruss’ family members
During Hampton’s recent episode of her YouTube series Speak On It, Burruss and Hampton revealed they “go way back.” The two knew each other years before both became popular due to the show.
Burruss reveals that Hampton dated her god brother. The relationship between Hampton and Burruss’ god brother was serious enough for Hampton to mingle with Burruss’ family often.
“She would come to family dinners and different stuff,” Burruss said. Hampton even joked around by asking Burruss if her god brother was single.
“Yes, I would come to family dinners,” Hampton agreed. Burruss responded, “You were cool.”
Kandi Burruss and Marlo Hampton did not get along during Hampton’s early days on ‘RHOA’
Hampton joined the show in season 4 as a friend of Nene Leakes. During the fourth season, Leakes and Burruss were not on the friendliest of terms. Due to Hampton’s close relationship with Leakes, she spent little time with Burruss.

Hampton did appear on an episode of Burruss’ online sex and dating advice show Kandi Koated Nights. During the appearance, Burruss asked how Hampton made her money, as rumors began surfacing that Hampton was a high-paid escort. When Hampton responded that she got her money and blessings from God and Burruss kept pressing, Hampton became offended.
The two argued during the season 4 reunion, with Hampton calling Burruss a “big mama,” alleging Burruss financially took care of men in her relationships. Burruss snapped back, calling Hampton an escort.
The two have since built a closer friendship
Now that fans are aware of Burruss and Hampton’s familiarity before RHOA, it’s odd to some that they had such a rough start on the show. They addressed such on Speak On It, with Burruss joking that Hampton “came on the show and shaded the f**k out of me.”
Luckily, the two have come a long way since their fallout during season 4. Hampton even noted that Burruss provided her with an opportunity for her own reality show centered around Hampton’s love of high end fashion and styling. The show was to be in place of Hampton filming RHOA as she and Leakes had a falling out during season 6 and Leakes allegedly banned Hampton from filming.
The show, Haute Lanta, was picked up by We TV. Per several blog reports, the show was canceled before filming even began due to Hampton’s ridiculous demands. Burruss admits that she was disappointed over the show’s cancellation, but Hampton says it just wasn’t her time.
Burruss has also been an advocate for Hampton to be a full-time peach holder. She says she wants viewers to see more of Hampton’s home life as a caregiver to her two nephews, as well as Hampton’s other familial relationships and business ventures.
