‘RHOA’: Kandi Burruss Says Reunion Was ‘Aggressive’, Defends Her Mom Against Fan Criticism
With the first part of the reunion for The Real Housewives of Atlanta set to air on May 10, some cast members are dishing on the show before the premiere. Nene Leakes feels she was ambushed, Porsha Williams has a bone to pick with Eva Marcille, and Kenya Moore says she has receipts.
These ladies read fan feedback too, and Kandi Burruss isn’t immune to hearing what people have to say about her marriage, friendships, and her mother, aka Mama Joyce.
While viewers will see her address specific season 12 incidents during the reunion, Burruss took a moment to talk about her mother, Leakes, and what’s to come during the three-part event.
Kandi Burruss says her mom’s feelings are hurt
Burruss posted her weekly “Speak On It” episode on YouTube, and hit on some season 12 tidbits and the issues between her mother and husband, Todd Tucker.
Responding to fans’ comments from social media, Burruss defended her mom’s behavior toward Tucker and said she’s only being an overprotective mother.
To recap, one of the final episodes showed Mama Joyce telling Burruss a story about being traumatized over lunch boxes and someone stealing her lunch money.
She was trying to imply Tucker is after her daughter’s money. This led fans to go off in the comment sections on social media about her behavior, saying she’s wrong. According to Burruss, Mama Joyce read what viewers were saying online and she’s hurt.
“Everyone’s judging her for just wanting to look out for her child. I am her child and that’s just how it’s gonna roll. And if you want to fault her for being an overprotective mom, then whatever. But it’s not because she wants to steal my money.”
Burruss address reunion drama with Nene Leakes
Several noteworthy moments caught the audience’s attention the RHOA Season 12 reunion trailer, including one where Burruss tells Leakes she’s embedded in her brain. You probably saw the clip.
Burruss expounded on the reunion, saying it was draining and she found this year’s meetup to be aggressive. Why? Without naming names, she said some of her castmates were on liquid courage. That factor dialed up the drama.
She said things got so out of hand with Leakes that host Andy Cohen muted their mics. It was that bad. Outside of the show, Burruss added that Leakes has been doing a lot of press and social media commentary pre-reunion that comes off as damage control.
Burruss and Leakes have been trading jabs all season
Off-camera, Burruss and her castmate are not getting along. She and Leakes have been throwing shade at each other for weeks about Kenya Moore, spinoffs, who belongs on the show, and more.
Burruss made a point to say she believes Leakes is blaming them for leaving the reunion multiple times, and for her choice to go to counseling. To her, that contradicts Leakes’ earlier claims that she was ready to drag everyone when it was time to get together for the event.
Burruss added that there will be some things fans won’t want to see or hear during the reunion because they’re so messy, and she hasn’t even seen the whole thing. Get ready for part one when it drops on Sunday, May 10.
