When Rick and Morty wrapped its fourth season finale, fans were split. Everyone was excited by the big reveal of Space Beth. However, they were instantly hit by the dread of waiting for Rick and Morty Season 5.

As viewers have come to accept, the Adult Swim series is known for its excruciatingly long hiatuses between seasons — and now mid-seasons. But will the fifth installment of Rick and Morty be released anytime soon? Recently, co-creator Dan Harmon updated fans on upcoming episodes.

Rick and Morty fans waited two years for the fourth season. But when speaking with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the 2019 premiere, Harmon and co-creator Justin Roiland revealed the lengthy hiatus between the third and fourth seasons would be the show’s last. The animated comedy was renewed for a whopping 70 episodes, and the team started working ahead.

“We’re rolling right into the next batch. The plan has always been to get them out quicker,” Roiland said.

Then Harmon added, “I think it’s safe to say without fear of being wrong that the gap between seasons 3 and 4 will be the longest and last time that it’s ever so long that it’s ridiculous. I don’t know how fast we can do it. But I know it will never be this long again.”

At the time, Harmon also confirmed the team already started writing Rick and Morty Season 5.

“We’re literally writing season 5 while finishing season 4 just to force ourselves to commit to a certain schedule,” he said. “Not to get anyone’s hopes up, but it is structured into our deal that if we’re going strong and fast there are options to deliver more episodes at a time.”

Dan Harmon delivers an update on ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 5

In May 2020, Chris Parnell, who voices Jerry, revealed Rick and Morty Season 5 was being written. He also suggested there wouldn’t be a delay when the cast started recording, despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“We have not started recording Season 5,” he told IGN. “But I know they have, certainly, episodes written and have it boarded to a certain extent. But I don’t know when we’ll start recording.”

He added, “I can actually record proper sessions from home. You know, as long as the studio does some safety protocols and stuff like that, it’s an easy situation to go into a booth and record and not have to encounter anybody.”

Then in July 2020, Harmon updated the status of Rick and Morty Season 5 during Adult Swim Con

“I am so excited about some of the season 5 stuff,” Harmon said. “We’re basically done writing it. The only exception is that I get on these Zoom edit sessions where we’re at the point of finalizing the finale of season five. But we have got all these writers on the script of season six.”

He continued, “It’s a crazy situation to be in because this show has notoriously kept everyone behind schedule. The artists have always been waiting for scripts. And now, finally, we’re trying to change that game and have them always have something to draw while we move ahead. So we’re there now.”

Meanwhile, Adult Swim dropped its first sneak peek at the new season. The cold open promo introduced Rick’s nemesis, Mr. Nimbus. And although it’s clear the clip was unfinished, the teaser is proof things are coming along. So stay tuned. There’s more ahead.
