Riverdale fans were thrilled to learn the long-running TV series will return for a seventh season. Apparently, though, some of the cast members aren’t all that eager. Actors have come and gone on the show, but for the most part, the main cast has been onboard since season 1. However, a recent interview reveals some might be ready to move on from Riverdale.

The CW series is loosely based on the ‘Archie’ comics

Riverdale is based on the Archie comics, which as been in print since 1939. For decades, the titular character has been in a seemingly permanent love triangle with Betty and Veronica. Overall, the comics stay on the straight and narrow. However, some spinoffs have explored darker themes, such as the time Archie fled Riverdale after a spell to bring a dog back to life went horribly wrong, turning Jughead into a zombie.

While the comics have mainly kept topics PG-rated, Riverdale quickly proved that would not be the case for the CW show. A more modern take on teen life, the series debuted with the death of a prominent character from the comics. At first, the show appeared to be a blend of teen angst and who-done-it murder mystery, but that quickly changed.

From there, things got strange. So far, Riverdale has explored cults, ghosts, serial killers, a convent full of murderous nuns, and even a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina crossover. Although the show has faced criticism for not seeming exactly sure what it wants, fans can’t get enough. Many viewers would love to see Riverdale continue for many more seasons, but some cast members wish to see it come to a neat close.

Is the end of ‘Riverdale’ near?

Though it’s unclear when Riverdale will end, the main cast members are ready to move on to other projects. That’s according to Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead.

Sprouse recently told GQ that most of the actors wish to “‘wrap it up with a bow’ and move on with their lives.”

It’s easy to understand why. Most of the main cast members will soon turn 30, and they’ve spent the majority of the show playing teenagers. Though Riverdale wrote in a seven-year time jump for season 5, the main cast is ready to move on to new roles.

Sprouse made sure to point out that he and his co-stars have enjoyed their time on the show. After all, it helped jump-start their careers. But all good things must come to an end.

There’s also the new direction of the show where the series is now incorporating supernatural elements. After an explosion that Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) survive, Archie and Betty seem to have superpowers.

“We knew we couldn’t sustain that level of all-out supernatural, but there’s actually a really hilarious sort of tradition in Archie Comics, like Jughead’s Time Police, Archie’s Weird Mysteries, and Archie’s Madhouse that are kind of more supernatural and bonkers stories,” creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told TV Guide. “So we thought, well, why don’t we do that? Let’s imagine that Stephen King or M. Night Shyamalan were in the writers room and we could allow the supernatural from Rivervale to sort of creep in and out suddenly at the edges of our storylines.”

With the show constantly changing dramas, it could just be time to wrap it up.

Though the cast is eager for something new, Riverdale isn’t finished. It’s in its sixth season, and The CW has already renewed it for a seventh. The writers have made it clear that are more stories to tell, so the show might continue for many more seasons.

That doesn’t mean Sprouse and castmates like KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, and Camila Mendes must remain on the show, however. As The Walking Dead has proven, a series can still continue without the original actors.

Another option could be a spinoff that explores lesser-known characters who deserve to have their story told. But there’s been no official word, so take that with a grain of salt.

However, we know for sure that Riverdale fans can enjoy at least one more season. Whether the main cast continues to reprise their roles remains to be seen.
