Riverdale Season 5 came to an end on Oct. 6, and its finale promised even more shake-ups in the future — as if the new episodes didn’t already bring massive changes to The CW series. Many actors introduced all the way back in season 1 have left the show. And although the Core Four remains its focal point, their relationships with one another just aren’t what they used to be. With those things in mind, fans may be wondering about the future of the series. So, was Riverdale canceled or renewed for season 6?

‘Riverdale’ made some major changes in season 5

Riverdale took a risk with season 5, throwing viewers into a seven-year time jump that upended many of the storylines and relationships they’d grown accustomed to. When the story picked up again, Betty (Lili Reinhart), Archie (KJ Apa), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), and Veronica (Camila Mendes) were all very different people.

And even Riverdale itself became a rundown, sadder version of the town it used to be. Overall, fans seem mixed about all the changes made to the series. While some felt it needed revamping, others found the approach Riverdale took to be somewhat depressing.

Still, Riverdale has powered through all of season 5’s major changes — and its finale suggests the creators have more in store for us. Does that mean the series is getting a season 6?

Was ‘Riverdale’ canceled or renewed?

Yes, Riverdale is returning for season 6. The CW announced the show’s renewal in February 2021 alongside nearly a dozen other series. Despite some fans wondering if Riverdale has gone through all the storylines it possibly can, the creators have plans for the future. One of them involves bringing in other parts of the Archieverse.

Although Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was never technically a Riverdale spinoff, the characters came from the same comics. The series also made several allusions to Riverdale, suggesting they were in the same world.

Not only is Riverdale getting a sixth season, but it’s going to bring in Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka). Although the time jump was meant to rejuvenate the show, this might prove a better way of doing that. When can fans expect the new episodes?

Riverdale returns for season 6 on Nov. 16, and it’s kicking things off with a five-episode called “Rivervale.” In it, Sabrina will likely help Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) with her latest conundrum. Now that’s a team-up we didn’t realize we needed!

According to Entertainment Weekly, the first five episodes of season 6 will be part of that event. The CW series will go on its regular midseason hiatus right after. It’s not clear when the rest of the season will return — but it’s likely to be sometime in the winter.
