‘Riverdale’: The Producer Behind Olivia Rodrigo’s Grammy-Winning Album ‘Sour’ Also Wrote a Song For the Show’s First Season

The popular TV show 'Riverdale' has had musical numbers since its first season. One of the show's first songs in the series was written by Dan Nigro, the producer of Olivia Rodrigo's Grammy-winning album 'Sour.'

Olivia Rodrigo burst onto the music scene in 2021 with her Grammy-winning debut album Sour. The album’s producer, Dan Nigro, is an accomplished musician himself who has written songs for many other artists. He even once wrote a song for the hit TV show Riverdale.

In the 2000s, Dan Nigro was the lead singer and guitarist for the indie rock band As Tall As Lions. Throughout the 2010s, Nigro worked as a songwriter and producer for other artists. In the 2020s, Nigro’s career was flipped on its head after Olivia Rodrigo released her smash debut album Sour.

Sour, produced entirely by Nigro, went on to win Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards, while Rodrigo’s debut single “drivers license” took home the award for Best Pop Vocal Performance. She also earned the highly-coveted Best New Artist honor.

Rodrigo was seated next to Nigro at the Grammys ceremony, and when she won Best New Artist, he was among the first people she thanked.

“A huge thanks to Dan [Nigro], who made all of my music with me,” Rodrigo said emotionally. “Dan, you are the best friend, collaborator, and person I could ever ask for, so this is all because of you, so thank you.”

Working with other artists is only part of what Nigro’s been able to do over the years. In 2017, he co-wrote a song for Riverdale‘s first season titled “These Are the Moments I Remember.”

According to IMDb, Nigro also co-wrote another song for Riverdale‘s second season called “Dig Your Grave.” In addition, his work was featured in the second season as MIYNT’s song “After the Gold Rush” — which Nigro co-wrote — was included in a scene.

The opportunity for Nigro to write music for Riverdale came after years of hard work with other artists. In the early 2010s, he produced several songs on Sky Ferreira’s hit album Night Time, My Time, including the singles “You’re Not the One” and “I Blame Myself” and the album cuts “I Will” and “Lost in Stereo.”

In 2014, Nigro got to work with the Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue. He wrote two songs on her 2014 album Kiss Me Once: “If Only” and “Golden Boy.” The following year, Nigro was a part of Carly Rae Jepsen‘s smash album E•MO•TION on the closing track “When I Needed You.” A few years later, he worked with fellow Grammy-winning producer Finneas O’Connell on his single “Heaven.”

More recently, Nigro worked with Caroline Polachek on some of her most popular songs. He co-produced her singles “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” and “Door” from her debut solo album Pang as well as the album tracks “Look At Me Now” and “I Give Up.”
