‘Riverdale’ Season 6 took a supernatural turn

Riverdale Season 6 began with its five-part “Rivervale” event. The episodes focused on an alternate version of Riverdale called Rivervale, where nobody was safe from supernatural dangers. Sacrificial rituals, ghosts, and even the teenage witch Sabrina Spellman turned Riverdale into something viewers had never seen before. A few shocking deaths also kept fans on their toes.

Of course, because it was an alternate reality, things should mostly go back to normal in the town of Riverdale once the show returns. But will they? According to Aguirre-Sacasa, some events in Rivervale will affect those in Riverdale.

Additionally, the showrunner says Rivervale gave the show the perfect starting point for a head-first dive into supernatural elements. He told Variety that the characters in Rivervale could do things that their Riverdale counterparts could never:

I think if we had proposed everyone in Riverdale getting together to sacrifice Archie for their personal gains, eyebrows might have been raised. As it was, even in Rivervale eyebrows were raised, but we allowed ourselves to push characters a little bit further and go a little bit more extreme. Like for instance, in [Episode] 602 you’ll see a different sides of Veronica and Reggie, you’ll see a different side to Tabitha and Jughead. Everyone gets to be the darkest version of themselves in Rivervale, which is fun.

A new ‘Riverdale’ Season 6 poster teases a ‘spell’

It seems the spookiness in the Rivervale event was only the beginning. A new Riverdale Season 6 poster, as seen above, shows a red, burning candle with the phrase “come watch a spell” written over it. Additionally, five of Riverdale’s main characters can be seen in the rising smoke: Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), and Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch).

Aguirre-Sacasa also shared the poster on his Instagram account. In the caption, he asked, “Are you ready to make your LAST STAND?”

The showrunner has become notorious for sharing cryptic Riverdale posts, so “last stand” could mean anything. However, it seems safe to say that an epic showdown of sorts is on its way.
