Robert Pattinson Confessed He Can’t Use His Real Voice in Movies; ‘I Literally Feel Like I’m Naked’
Robert Pattinson has certainly had an interesting career in Hollywood. Having starred in some of the biggest franchises like Harry Potter or the Twilight movies, the actor did a lot of indies for a while. Now, however, he poised to lead another huge franchise with his upcoming film: The Batman. Throughout his career, Pattinson has captured fans’ attention with his impressive range. His vocal range, in particular, has always kept fans guessing.
Like many English-born actors, Pattinson has been able to adapt a very believable American accent. As many of Pattinson’s fans were first introduced to him as Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, some were shocked when they eventually heard him use his natural speaking voice. But how was the actor able to adopt an American accent with such ease? Back in 2019, he gave an interview with NPR and revealed that his passion for rap music as a child lent itself to playing a believable American.
Robert Pattinson revealed rapping helped developed his American accent
“I think, especially with American accents, I – it was probably definitely from singing and also – and I did genuinely really want to be a rapper when I was a kid. And so that – and, like, and I used to obsessively listen to that and all the kind of ’90s and early 2000s rap records,” Pattinson revealed. “They always used to have these kind of interludes with little skits on the album. And I remember, like, me and my friends after school would always try and record those, make her own little ones of those.”
There were times when Pattinson adopting a different accent was a requirement for the role. Now, however, crafting a different accent seems to be a requirement for the actor’s creative process. In fact, the Remember Me star shared that he can no longer use his real speaking voice or accent while he’s playing a role. In fact, an accent is the first thing he develops when he’s building a character.
Why ‘The Batman’ actor can’t use his real voice in movies
“And still to this day, I mean, whenever I’m doing a movie or a character in an English accent, I mean, I find – I literally feel like I’m naked,” Pattinson confessed. “And I can’t – I’m incapable of doing my normal voice in a character. It just doesn’t come out at all. It’s – every single time I read something, the first thing to change is – has something to do with my voice. It kind of – it just does it naturally. And I think there’s – I find a kind of deep pleasure in doing accents as well.”
Pattinson loved developing his accent for ‘The Lighthouse’
Pattinson shared that he particularly loved developing his accent for The Lighthouse and likened the experience to a musical endeavor. “Especially something like The Lighthouse where, I mean, the more you practice it, there’s just certain syllables that are really fun,” the actor added. “It’s really satisfying to say. And it’s kind of – when you’re trying to get something to sound right, it’s like tuning guitar strings.”
Clearly, Pattinson enjoys developing new ways of speaking for each movie that he lends his talents to. We’re sure fans can’t wait to see the two voices that he’s dreamed up for his role in The Batman.
