Rosé From the K-Pop Group, BLACKPINK, Is Actually From New Zealand and Australia (Which Totally Explains the Accent)
These girls are breaking records and making history, one music video, and performance at a time. Not all of the K-pop group, BLACKPINK, members are from South Korea, though. That includes singer Rosé, who actually grew up in New Zealand and Australia before performing with this girl group. Learn more about this performer here.
Rosé is one of the members of the K-pop group, BLACKPINK
This K-pop group, BLACKPINK, debuted in 2016. Since then, they’ve earned millions of fans worldwide. From their groundbreaking Coachella performance to their collaboration with Lady Gaga to their YouTube videos that earn hundreds of millions of views, BLACKPINK pushed themselves into mainstream music.
Composed of four members, (Rosé, Lisa, Jisoo, and Jennie,) BLACKPINK has two main singers. One of which is the talented 23-year-old, Rosé. Before she was in BLACKPINK, however, this performer was cheerleading in Australia. She was actually born in New Zealand, though.
Before she moved to Korea, Rosé lived in Australia
According to the South China Morning Post, this performer, with her real name being Roseanne Park Chae-young was born in Auckland, New Zealand. After that, she moved to Australia, where she auditioned for YG Entertainment at 15-years-old.
Rosé only auditioned after her father suggested it somewhat as a joke, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. She’s been performing with BLACKPINK ever since, oftentimes commenting on her experience as a foreigner in the world of K-pop music.
“I always played music for more as a hobby,” the singer said. “In Australia, I didn’t think that there was much of a chance for me to become a singer – especially to become a K-pop star … I was living so far from the country that it never really occurred to me as a possibility.”
Rosé is bilingual, singing in both Korean and English
Because she was originally born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Rosé is fluent in English and shows off her diction during songs like “How You Like That.” It was because she was a foreigner, though, that she had to take Korean lessons after joining her label.
“Coming to YG entertainment as a trainee was one of the most challenging yet most life-changing periods of my life,” Rosé shared during an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald.
However, Rosé isn’t the only performer in this K-pop group who speaks (and sings in multiple languages.) Lisa, born in Thailand, speaks Japanese, Korean, English, and Thai. Jennie, who was originally born in South Korea, speaks English fluently, often speaking alongside Rosé during interviews overseas.
Fans can keep up with Rosé and the other the BLACKPINK members on social media. Music by BLACKPINK, including their recently released single, “How You Like That,” is available on most major streaming platforms.
