Royal Biographer Reveals When and How Prince George Found Out He Was Going to Be King
From the day he was born, Prince George‘s future was mapped out for him. As Prince William‘s first child, he is the next in line after his father in the line of succession to become Britain’s monarch. Of course, that’s an enormous responsibility and many people wondered how William would explain it to George.
When asked when he would tell his son, the Prince of Wales said there would be a time and place for that. Now, we’re learning when that conversation with George took place and what insiders are saying about the way William and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) are balancing George’s childhood and preparing him for the future. Plus, the other thing George knows all about now that his parents haven’t been able to hide.
When Prince George was told he would be king one day
Royal biographer Robert Lacey said that Prince William had that very important talk with George in July 2020, right around his 7th birthday as he didn’t want his son to find out like he did from other children at school.
Express noted that Lacey revealed the conversation was held at a “controlled moment of their choice” and was “reflecting William’s unhappiness at the haphazard fashion in which the whole business of his royal destiny had buzzed around his head from the start.”
However, Amaia Arrieta — whose clothes have been worn by George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis for years — believes Prince George knew even before that. She told People: “I think George has known almost from the beginning. He has always had a more prominent role. There have been many events with his late great-grandmother when it was just him, and his siblings weren’t there.”
Today, George attends some engagements with his parents but they are trying to maintain a good balance between his royal duties and him just being a kid.
As one Palace insider explained: “It’s a massive balancing act. William and Kate are doing the right thing, protecting him so he can have as normal a childhood as possible, but he’s also dipping into duties as a future monarch. He’s getting firsthand experience of what it’s like to be a royal and a monarch and firsthand experience of being a normal boy.”
What else Prince George knows all about that his parents can’t shield him from
According to a royal expert, something else Prince George knows all about at his young age is his parents’ feud with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Royal author and historian Dr. Tessa Dunlop says that George is aware of and understands what’s going on in the family now.
“[He’s] lost Uncle Harry and so forth and he realizes he’s got to step up to it — [kids] can often be quite mature,” Dunlop told OK!, adding, “A lot has happened for the royal family and they can’t possibly protect him from all of it. There’s been huge events, the queen has died and that has pushed William and Kate up a gear, up a rank, and by definition George as well.”
The expert added: “We saw him embrace his role at the king’s coronation and I expect one of the ways to help him was to have some of his friends alongside him, perhaps that was part of helping George normalize his experience.”
