After stopping in the U.K. to attend a service celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, Prince Harry traveled to Nigeria with his wife Meghan Markle. But what the couple did while there is said to have really “angered” King Charles.

News of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s trip to Nigeria was reported weeks in advance. The purpose of the visit was thought to be to promote the Invictus Games. But it turned into something more, which according to a royal expert, left King Charles “angrier than anyone has ever seen him.”

What Meghan did that had King Charles so angry

Royal author Tom Quinn noted that Harry did meet with injured soldiers while in the West African country. However, the trip also included highlights for Meghan like speaking at a leadership event, proving that it was actually more like a royal tour for the two non-working royals.

Speaking to The Mirror, Quinn claimed that “Charles is said to be angrier than anyone has ever seen him. What’s really upset the applecart is the fact that the Nigerians treated Meghan and Harry as if they too thought this was an official tour — all the signs were there as the couple were greeted with dances [and] receptions.

“Everything you might expect from an official royal visit was there — the receptions, the visits to schools and charities, to wounded soldiers and the disabled. Meghan and Harry’s speeches and their whole attitude has been designed to give the impression that they are still fully paid-up royals and [Prince] William and his father King Charles don’t like it one bit.”

Quinn added that “William is absolutely furious and determined to find a way to stop this happening in future …  It’s as if Harry and Meghan have gone rogue — their Nigeria trip is a bold statement that they refuse to accept they are no longer working royals. William and Charles are scratching their heads and thinking, ‘How are we going to control this nightmare situation?’

“For Charles and William, it’s as if Meghan and Harry are saying, ‘We don’t need your permission to be working royals we will do it on our own terms whenever and wherever we like’.”

Locals in Nigeria explain why they were not happy about the Sussexes’ ‘unofficial tour’

While some have hailed the Sussexes’ “unofficial tour” as a success, several royal commentators slammed it including GB News host Nana Akua. She described the trip as a “fake” tour saying: “The Nigerians aren’t falling for their fake crud either. The pair have successfully isolated pretty much every country they have visited.”

As for how Meghan and Harry’s visit was viewed in Nigeria, special assistant to former president Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri wrote on X: “I thought the ongoing visit by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Nigeria would generate more of a buzz in the local and international media than it is generating. Rather disappointing news coverage. In England, the visit is barely registering. In America, it is completely ignored.”

A video posted on Reddit has generated buzz from locals who expressed their dissatisfaction with the duke and duchess’s trip to their country.

One person explained: “What effect does it have on our economy? Harry’s coming and Nigeria is going to spend billions. Look Nigerians are dying. Everybody’s frustrated over economic hardships … Let me tell you, if you seek my opinion and other people’s opinions, in fact conduct an opinion poll, it’s wasting resources.”

And another local said the prince and former Suits star‘s tour was “Not a welcome idea. That’s the truth. Whether the wife claims that she’s part of Nigeria or not, it’s not a welcome idea.”
